The research breakthrough from field research gives in Pokémon GO in March 2019 the chance for 8 different legendary encounters. We show you which ones they are.
What’s new? Niantic already shared information with some selected partners about which encounters from the research breakthroughs in the upcoming months of March and April can occur. Altogether, there are again 8 possible Pokémon.
Which Pokémon can appear? Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Regice, Registeel, and Regirock.

What rewards have there been so far? For the research breakthroughs in January and February 2019, you could encounter Raikou, Entei, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-Oh, Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. So, the legendary birds were exchanged for the Regi Trio.
Keep in mind that the new rewards will only be available from March 1st after 10 PM. So, it’s better to wait a few minutes longer than 10 PM if you want one of the new rewards.
What do players say about the change?
The news quickly circulated on social media.
How breakthroughs were before: In the first months after the introduction of field research, there was a fixed Pokémon as a research breakthrough every month. So, you knew exactly what reward you would get when you had a breakthrough.
That’s different now: Now there is a large selection of Pokémon that appear randomly as rewards. Trainers have a problem with this randomness.
Reddit user ididnothing23 writes: “I would be okay with it if there weren’t the legendary beasts [Entei, Suicune, Raikou]. How many Suicunes does Niantic want to give me?”
To this, tonyharrison84 replies: “Yes, right? The beasts each had their own reward month and have been around since December. We don’t need them anymore.”
There are also less critical voices: Some players are happy to get the chance to encounter certain Pokémon again.
- “I don’t have the Regis yet, so this is something.”
- “I would prefer only the Regis to be available instead of 8 legendary Pokémon.”
- “I was really hoping for just the Regis. Let’s see how chance plays out.”
It is clear that many players would like more variety in the research breakthroughs. However, the current system of randomness seems to need some work to make it more enjoyable for players.
Many find the selection of 8 Pokémon too large. In addition, they wish for an artificial cap so that they do not keep getting the same Pokémon as a reward.

Another player explains that they encountered 8 Suicune in a row during their breakthrough.
Many players are not keen on making this encounter depend on chance. “I’m really not a fan of this random lottery system,” they say. Others say: “Chance doesn’t matter to me, but the variety should be reduced.” They wish for only 4 instead of 8 possible encounters.
