What was that teaser? Pokémon GO is celebrating its 3rd birthday with a big event and also released an image. You can see the 3 starters of the 5th generation on it.
It is the first time that Pokémon from the 5th generation are seen in such an image. It shows that Pokémon GO is planning with this generation and that it is not too far away.

What does this teaser mean? It is just a teaser for now. Niantic did not address the Pokémon at all, but rather hid the monsters in a large chaotic image.

Would the generation fit already? Purely from the Pokémon perspective, we are almost done with the 4th generation. Only Pantimimi and Rotom are missing as non-legendary Pokémon from this generation. Additionally, some legendary and mythical Pokémon will come over time.
However, we will not experience a large new wave of Pokémon from the 4th generation anymore. This will come next time with the 5th generation.
When could we expect the generation? The 4th generation was added to the game in October 2018. It was teased in July with a similar image as this one. So it took several months until implementation.
If Niantic sticks to this pattern, then we should not expect the 5th generation until after summer. This would also fit, as the 4th gen will then have been in the game for at least a year.
What do players say about it? The first images of Serpifeu, Floink, and Ottaro are causing great excitement among players. The Pokémon are even more popular than the new event that was announced.
On Reddit , a matching thread has already garnered almost 5000 upvotes in just 12 hours. The thread about the upcoming event has only 600 upvotes.
What else was shown in the image? If all Pokémon in this image are to play a role in Pokémon GO again, then especially Mew and Mewtwo are likely to be of interest. These two Pokémon can also be seen in the image.
