On Wednesday, October 5th, a new event will start in Pokémon GO that finally brings you a new evolution. However, trainers do not want to use it at all. We at MeinMMO will explain the reason for this.
What event is it? On October 5th, the “Stars of Evolution” event will begin. You will also have the chance to secure a Cosmovum for the first time.
Yet, despite the fact that the monster has been a topic in the Pokémon GO reddit community for weeks and the finds gave trainers hope, they actually do not want to secure the new monster anymore. We looked into why players now have concerns.
Update from October 5th: Starting today, you can secure a Cosmovum. However, trainers are reporting issues with evolving Cosmog.
Why some trainers do not want Cosmovum
Is this the reason? After many players eagerly awaited a release of Cosmovum and it is finally here, some prefer not to have the monster at all. The reason for this is the event announcement from Pokémon GO, which appeared on the game’s blog on September 28th.
This announcement stated that there will be Cosmovum in Pokémon GO for the first time, but you must evolve it using 25 candies from Cosmog. However, looking into the game, it quickly becomes clear that players have only been able to catch a single Cosmog so far.
Many players do not want to part with it. While Cosmog itself is not particularly strong, some associate it with emotional value or want to keep it for a possible Living Dex. For this reason, evolution is not an option for many. The reddit user xmadison84 wrote the following in his post:
I really do not want to evolve my Cosmog next week. I just saw that we can evolve Cosmog to Cosmovum next week. Cosmog is one of my favorite Pokémon because of its design. The evolution would mean that it will no longer be available as Cosmog… maybe forever. Is there anyone who gives up their progress and skips this task? I do…

The user ZekromFPS is also disappointed that he will have to evolve his only Cosmog to progress in the task (via reddit.com): “I have a living Dex, so this will be painful because I do not want to give up the special research. I will evolve it if I have to, but I hope they give us at least one more sooner or later.”
How strong Cosmog and its evolutions are, you can learn in our related article:
Why don’t the trainers just wait? Trainers received their first and only Cosmog from the current special research “A cosmic companion”, which will continue in October. Some now have concerns that evolving Cosmog could be part of the research.
If this is the case, they cannot continue to complete it without giving up their precious Cosmog. While special researches are generally valid indefinitely and can therefore be completed in the future, they are thematically tied to current content, which can make it harder to complete the tasks at a later time.
Furthermore, Niantic has also provided another free research in the past two seasons if the special research was completed before the end of the season. Whether this will be the case in the Season of Light is still unknown.
A Living Dex is a way some trainers collect their Pokémon. Instead of just registering the monsters in their Pokédex, they want to collect each one, including every single evolutionary stage, in their storage.

Is there hope for more Cosmog?
What does Niantic say about this? Basically, more Cosmog are expected to come into the game. If you read the event post from Niantic a bit more closely, it quickly becomes clear that there are plans for this. As Pokémon GO writes: “You should not hesitate to evolve your only Cosmog, as there are rumors that you may encounter more Cosmog in the distant future.”
But when this “distant future” will be, the post does not reveal. It is conceivable that Cosmog could come into the game outside of research during the Season of Light, for example in raids. These are just speculations.
Do these prospects reassure the players?
This vague prediction from the developers that more specimens will be found in the distant future is not enough for many players. They want to know beforehand when and how they will get new Cosmog before they evolve their only one.
Additionally, some had less luck when catching the first specimen and could only get a relatively weak one. For this reason, they would prefer to wait to evolve into a stronger Cosmog.

These are their concerns: Yet especially in regard to other monsters that players have been waiting for a long time, they have concerns that it could also take ages for more Cosmog to arrive. You can read on reddit their own time perspectives on the term “in the distant future”:
- onestworldproblem: “This is such a strange phrasing that a part of me thought that ‘distant future’ could mean that there will be a silly time travel event this season where we can catch a bunch of them. But I am probably an idiot and ‘distant future’ just means 5 years.”
- hobbiehawk: “Distant future. Like the time it takes to get the Platinum Giovanni badge.”
- Google_Goofy:cosplay: “Especially the ‘distant’ future does not sound promising. It sounds more like ‘we have no intention of releasing more, but we do not rule it out.'”
- Lightning1999: “Distant future for Niantic… 2 years or 12 years?”
- jesusunderline: “Do not worry, we will get another one at the GO Tour Alola in 2027.”
- arizonajake: “Dear Niantic, nice try, but I still won’t evolve mine. Maybe I’ll evolve it at some point in the ‘distant future’.”
Are there trainers who want to evolve Cosmog? Yes, especially players who have already caught a strong Cosmog want to take the opportunity to evolve it to Cosmovum. The user jaydaygrad08 wrote on reddit: “Mine has 14/14/14. Time to grow up.”
Paraplueschi is also convinced that nothing in Pokémon GO disappears forever and that everything will come back eventually (via reddit.com). However, when this will happen, and whether Niantic will provide some clarity to trainers in the coming days, remains to be seen.
What is your opinion on the evolution of Cosmog? Do you want to keep the little legendary Pokémon until more specimens are available in the game? Or will you evolve it to Cosmovum next week? Feel free to let us know here on MeinMMO in the comments and discuss with other trainers on this topic.
Niantic has come under heavy criticism in the community before. Especially the contents of the in-game shop cause a lot of head shaking. YouTuber Spieletrend takes a harsh look at Pokémon GO.
