In May 2021, there are some changed Field Research tasks in Pokémon GO. We show you all of them at a glance and present the worthwhile ones.
What’s new? Regularly, with a new month, the Field Research tasks and rewards that trainers can receive in the game change. In May, there is a Galar form of Ponyta as a research breakthrough for you.

All Field Research tasks at a glance
We show you here the tasks and respective rewards (via reddit.com / Leekduck.com). If Pokémon are marked with a star among the rewards, then you can encounter them in their Shiny form.
Catching: For the catching tasks, the following tasks are available to you. There isn’t really a particularly worthwhile task here. If you are specifically looking for Shinys, you can check out the respective quests here. The task concerning Fairy type is exciting. Because according to Niantic’s support, the global challenge is already running, where trainers are supposed to catch as many Fairy Pokémon as possible (via Twitter.com)
Because if enough Fairy Pokémon are caught, you will unlock further bonuses for the Xerneas event.
- Catch 3 Pokémon
- Encounter with Hoot-Hoot
- Catch 10 Pokémon
- Encounter with Magikarp*
- Catch a Dragon type Pokémon
- Encounter with Dratini*
- Catch 5 Fairy type Pokémon
- Encounter with Clefairy*
- Catch 5 Pokémon with weather boost
- Encounter with Vulpix* or Swablu*
Throwing: For these tasks, the goal is to make the best throws possible. Sometimes you even need to land these consecutively without having a misthrow in between.
Attractive is the quest that rewards you with Numel. Because its evolution, Salamence, is among the best Dragon attackers in Pokémon GO. You definitely want to have that in your collection. Also, there’s a chance to catch Pandir in its fourth form as Shiny. If you haven’t got that as a Shiny hunter yet, you should look for this quest. Coordinate with other trainers in your area and find out when and at which stop the quest will be given.

- Land 3 great throws
- Encounter with Gastly*, Lileep* or Anorith*
- Land 3 great throws in a row
- Encounter with Onix*
- Land 5 great curveball throws in a row
- Encounter with Pandir* (Number 4)
- Land 3 fabulous throws in a row
- Encounter with Numel*
- Use 10 berries while catching Pokémon
- Encounter with Marill*
Fighting: In the battle tasks, you can prove yourself in fields such as PvP, raids, or against Team Rocket grunts. These quests are particularly interesting for Shiny collectors. Here there are still some Pokémon from Gen 1 with a chance of their shiny forms. You should grab the quest with Beldum. Its evolution, Metagross, is among the best attackers in Pokémon GO.
- Defeat 5 Team Rocket grunts
- Encounter with Scyther*
- Fight in the GO Battle League
- Encounter with Rotomurf
- Win a raid
- Encounter with Beldum*
- Win a raid of level 3 or higher
- Encounter with Omanyte* or Kabuto*
- Win 5 raids
- Encounter with Aerodactyl*
Buddies / Friends: In these tasks, you again have the chance to catch Fairy Pokémon. Since these count for the global challenge, you should complete them to unlock more bonuses at the event with Xerneas.
- Earn 5 hearts with your buddy
- Encounter with Jigglypuff*
- Send 3 gifts to friends
- Encounter with Snubbull*
- Trade a Pokémon
- Encounter with Pidgeotto
Miscellaneous: Exciting about these tasks is probably the encounter with Eevee. If you don’t own many of them yet, this will give you another chance at a Shiny. This is interesting because Pokémon GO will unlock a new evolution for this species. Trainers have already discovered the name trick for Feelinara.

- Use 5 Power-Ups on Pokémon
- Encounter with Bulbasaur*, Charmander* or Squirtle*
- Take a snapshot of a Bug-type Pokémon
- Encounter with Caterpie*
- Use an incense
- Encounter with Aerodactyl*
In addition to this list, there are the Field Research tasks that were specifically activated for the Snap event.
In the coming weeks, trainers have quite a bit planned. There will be events with new, legendary Pokémon from Generation 6. Also, raid hours and spotlight hours.
