In January 2020, there will be new research breakthroughs in Pokémon GO. But which Pokémon would be good candidates and which monster would you wish for?
What is the field research breakthrough? You receive this breakthrough after completing field research for 7 days. As a reward, there will be a Pokémon in the breakthrough that you can catch.
After there were two months with 5 legendary Pokémon in the breakthrough, changes have been announced for January 2020. However, which Pokémon will be new is not yet known.
Here we present a few candidates that could be considered.
Possible candidates for the research breakthrough in January
These Legendary Pokémon could be available: Lugia and Ho-Oh have appeared several times in the breakthrough. They could return in January 2020. After all, they were recently available for capture in raids for a weekend. Now they might be available through other means.
The 3 Regis could also be possible candidates. They are all available as Shinies now, which would provide more incentives in the breakthrough. Most recently, Regice could be caught in raids.
The trio from Generation 2, consisting of Entei, Raikou and Suicune, would also be a good choice. They are all available as Shinies and haven’t been available for a while.
Special costume Pokémon? In September and October, you could obtain Eevee with a flower crown from the breakthrough. So it is also possible that such a costume Pokémon could return. After all, there was also Pikachu with a flower crown.
However, there was sharp criticism of the breakthrough with Eevee. Niantic would have to expect backlash again if they include a costume Pokémon in the breakthrough.
New Pokémon from Gen 5? In 2018, Ninjatom was available for a month in the research breakthrough. This caused surprises since the Pokémon had not been available before. It could also be that Niantic simply includes a brand new Pokémon in the breakthrough.
In Gen 5, there are several Pokémon that would fit well in the breakthrough and have no evolutions. Possible candidates could be Drampa or the two fighting Pokémon Jiutesto and Karadonis.
