For almost seven years, trainers have been playing Pokémon GO, but the beginning has clearly stuck in the memory of many. However, even today, the community shows time and again that such moments are still possible, trainers report.
When Pokémon GO was released on July 6, 2016, a short, intense period began when the game was suddenly everywhere. A massive hype around the mobile game drew countless players outside, all on a mission to catch them all.
Back then, crazy images appeared, of hundreds of players in New York’s Central Park chasing an Aquana, or nighttime park outings by numerous Japanese players because a rumor was circulating that one might catch a Mewtwo there.
Pokémon fans openly played together, everywhere the game was a topic. Today, seven years later, the hype surrounding Pokémon GO is no longer comparable. While there is still a passionate player base that continues to be out and about catching Pokémon or playing together at events, the worldwide phenomenon of the Pokémon GO release was something entirely different.
Nevertheless, there are still moments that remind us of those times or at least show that the Pokémon GO community is something very special, apparently still happening from time to time today.
Some trainers are currently discussing this in the subreddit for Pokémon GO.
Trainers share moments: Under a post in the subreddit for Pokémon GO, players are currently sharing nice encounters they have experienced through the game.
Especially today, where the game is significantly less present than it was back then, it is indeed something special to meet like-minded people on catching tours. This results in beautiful moments, as some trainers chime in:
- “I was once out alone and saw a whole family on the other side of the street starting a raid who yelled over to me asking if I wanted to play and join in,” reports a user (via reddit): “After we won, they gave me tips on mega evolutions that I didn’t know about! There are definitely still some nice moments!”
- “It was about 11:00 PM when I encountered a man with dogs who were barking loudly and excitedly at me […]”, reports another (via reddit): “I kept some distance between us when the man suddenly asked me, ‘Hey, are you Yellow’? I thought he wanted to tease me until I realized that an Instinct member had just taken over a gym. So I answered yes.” The other player turned out to be a team Yellow member as well, and a nice conversation ensued.
- “The community in my area is wonderful. I have made several friends through the game, and raid hours on Wednesdays give me a reason to go out and socialize. The camaraderie has helped me cope with the tough times I’m currently going through,” writes another user (via reddit).
At the same time, however, trainers are also discussing in the comments that it depends on the location where one plays. For while some places still have plenty of players, it is not so easy to meet fellow players in other, smaller places.
Nevertheless: Especially at events like Community Days, players say they often encounter members of the Pokémon GO community.
