Despite declining player numbers, Pokémon GO is still one of the most lucrative games on the market.
Pokémon GO caused a huge hype upon its release, captivating millions of players worldwide. The game is free to download from various app stores but offers different purchase options within the game. In the in-game shop, players can buy Poké Balls or various items that support trainers on their Pokémon adventures. This sales model has been so successful for Pokémon GO that its revenues even overshadow Hollywood blockbusters.
Higher Revenues than Warcraft – The Beginning
In the first month after the release of the game, Pokémon GO generated revenues of 200 million dollars. Although the hype has decreased recently and player numbers have significantly declined, the game remains lucrative. According to Sensor Tower, Pokémon GO has now generated more than 440 million dollars in revenue.
As a comparison, Sensor Tower created a graphic that compares the game’s revenues with movie box offices from this summer. Pokémon GO is now generating about 4 million dollars in revenue per day! This figure has remained constant over the past few weeks. It should be noted that the game has still not been released in major markets like China or India. Therefore, the figures could still rise further.
However, the development team at Niantic is not resting on its laurels with these revenues. In a data mining effort, hints of a Buddy functionality have emerged, which aims to strengthen the connection between trainers and Pokémon.
