Niantic, the developers of Pokémon GO, have called for a sustainability campaign. Players are to help improve the planet – thus unlocking rewards in Pokémon GO.
What kind of event is this? Unlike the ongoing Rival Week or the other events in April, the sustainability campaign is not an in-game content of Pokémon GO. Instead, Niantic calls on players to engage more in the real world.
We invite Niantic players – but also all other people – to step by step do something sustainable for the planet together with us. This year, we are trying to make a big impact in the fight against climate change with small actions.

The developers refer to various areas where one could get active. Suggestions include beautifying the neighborhood or sustainable daily design. For example, one could:
- Collect and dispose of litter in the area
- Plant trees or other plants
- Build a bee hotel
- Get around on foot or by bike
- Use reusable instead of disposable items like shopping bags

How to participate: Those who want to participate in the action are to share their action with a picture and description via social media – under the hashtag #SustainableWithNiantic and the tag @NianticLabs.
This is possible between April 20, 8 PM CEST and April 24, 01:59 AM CEST. During this period, the individual post will be counted. By the way, the sustainability week with Sleima and Unratütox in Pokémon GO is also running during this time.
Those who participate can also mention a charity organization in the post for which they would like to engage. The organizations that are tagged the most, Niantic intends to support with 5,000 USD.
These bonuses are available in Pokémon GO: The campaign is linked to the Niantic games Pokémon GO and Ingress. The posts significantly related to the action will be critical. Upon reaching a certain number of participants, bonuses will be unlocked in the games.
In Pokémon, this looks as follows:
- The first reward level kicks in at 2,500 participants and unlocks more frequent Tier 5 raids on April 25 between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM.
- The second level is activated at 5,000 participants. Here, an additional box with 3 remote raid passes will be available in the shop on April 25, available from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.
- Level 3 comes into play when 10,000 participants join. Then, on April 25, players will also get double catch XP between 10:00 AM and 8:00 PM.
If enough players participate, there could be some additional raid opportunities and the chance for extra experience points on April 25.
