What is the Community Day? Once a month, Pokémon GO holds a special one-day event called Community Day. On this day, a specific Pokémon is highlighted.
This Sunday it will be time again for the Community Day featuring Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew. These two Pokémon, one of the Ground type and the other of the Ice and Steel types, will spawn in the wild throughout the day and will also be available in their shiny forms.

Community Day in March 2022 – Start, Bonuses, and Live Events
When? Sunday, March 13, 2022, from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM local time
Pokémon of the Day: Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew will spawn more frequently in the wild
Exclusive Attack (up to 2 hours after the event):
– Night Slash when evolving Sandshrew to Sandslash
– Dark Claw when evolving Alolan Sandshrew to Alolan Sandslash
Bonuses:
– 4x hatching speed for eggs
– Incense & Lure Modules last 3 hours
– Surprise after snapshots
– Event sticker when spinning at PokéStops, opening gifts, or in the shop
As with every Community Day, you will have 6 hours this Sunday to catch Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew and take advantage of the event bonuses. To attract even more specimens, you can of course use incense and lure modules again. However, keep in mind that Niantic has “nerfed” the incense.
What does the in-game shop have in store for C-Day? Of course, you can discover some special items related to the Community Day featuring Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew in the in-game shop. Here’s what it has to offer:
- An event ticket with the special research “Sand and Snow” for about 1 Euro
- A free event box with 30 Ultra Balls
- A Community Day box with 50 Ultra Balls, 3 Super Incubators, 5 Lucky Eggs, and a Charged TM

How to make the most of the C-Day with Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew
Prepare: Before the actual Community Day starts, you should prepare for the event. Especially trainers who want to play the whole day should have enough space in their Pokémon storage. So sort through your Pokémon now to make space.
Also, you should start gathering a stock of balls. We recommend collecting at least 350 balls so that you don’t have to restock immediately. How to get balls in Pokémon GO can be read in our related article.
Worthwhile items: If you want to catch a lot of Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew during Community Day, you should focus on incense and lure modules instead of just balls. These will help you attract more specimens. For farming candies, Sananaberries are also useful.
Due to the egg bonus that will be available during the event, it’s also advisable to have a corresponding stock of incubators. In particular, eggs with higher distances, such as 7 km, 10 km, or 12 km eggs, are great for hatching on this day. Eggs will hatch four times faster than usual.
Tip: Don’t forget to stock your incubators right before the event ends. This way, you can still benefit from the reduced hatch distance for these eggs even after the Community Day.
Is the Community Day with Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew worth it?
What Pokémon are Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew? Sandshrew is a Ground-type Pokémon from the first generation of games. It can evolve into Sandslash with the help of 50 candies. The mouse Pokémon also has an Alolan form: Alolan Sandshrew.
This form is of the Ice and Steel types and can evolve into an Alolan Form of Sandslash. Appropriately, during the Alola season, you will encounter both forms during Community Day.
Are there shiny Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew? Yes, both shiny Sandshrew and shiny Alolan Sandshrew can be caught during Community Day. On these days, the shiny chance is generally increased, so you will surely encounter one or more shiny specimens.
You can recognize shiny Sandshrew by its green body. For Alolan Sandshrew, you should instead look for a blue belly, which differentiates the shiny form from the normal one. The differences can again be seen in the picture.
How strong are Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew? Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew as well as Sandslash and Alolan Sandslash are not particularly strong. Their stats in attack, endurance, and defense are solid but not sufficient to play a role in raids.
Also, in the PvP league, you should rather look at other candidates. Only in the Ultra League can Alolan Sandslash score some points and is a possible alternative to other Ice-type Pokémon like Walrein or Articuno (via pvpoke.com).
Who is the Community Day worth it for? The event offers a perfect opportunity to hatch eggs on a larger scale, for which you would otherwise have to walk a long distance. So if you still have a few 12 km eggs from the Rocket bosses in your storage, you should take this chance to use them.
Additionally, shiny hunters will get their money’s worth that day. After all, both Sandshrew and Alolan Sandshrew can be found in their shiny forms. However, those looking for a strong attacker for raids will not find what they are looking for at Community Day.
