Legendary Pokémon like Zapdos or Mewtwo are something special – But is that the case with Pokémon GO?
The fascinating aspect of Pokémon games has always been the collection of different types of Pokémon. However, for one to stand out in the crowd, simply having the regular Pokémon that every Trainer possesses is not enough. With Legendary Pokémon in your collection, you are even more unique and stronger as a Trainer, as they are extremely rare and hard to catch – But how do you get a legendary Pokémon like Mewtwo?

Catch Mewtwo at a Community Event?
So far, developer Niantic has not commented on how they plan to implement legendary Pokémon in Pokémon GO. In other Pokémon titles, there has been a chance to catch a legendary monster monthly – for example, this has happened in “Nintendo 3DS” games to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Pokémon series. It cannot be ruled out that legendary Pokémon like Articuno, Zapdos, or Moltres will only appear in special locations around the world, as that would be unfair to the Pokémon Trainers who cannot travel far.
Trading Pokémon with friends will be possible in the future!
Many Pokémon fans still clearly remember Mewtwo. It is considered one of the strongest Pokémon and has caused a lot of trouble not just in the animated series. It is said that multiple types of Mewtwo exist. Some of them were created by humans and have thus developed a hatred for humanity. To tame this hatred, it took a lot of persuasion from Ash during its first appearance in the series!
In the first trailer for Pokémon GO, one can see a Mewtwo appearing as an opponent at a kind of Community Event, which presumably must be defeated within a set time limit (10 minutes). (For those of you who are impatient: Start at about 1:50 minutes)

Another option to incorporate the legendary birds and the Mew Duo into the game besides a Community Event would be the release of Pokémon Sun and Moon.

Legendary Pokémon Team-Dependent?
According to a Reddit post, there is also the possibility that as a Trainer, you can only possess one of the 3 birds – which one it is depends on which team you join at level 5. Yellow corresponds to Zapdos, red stands for Moltres, and Team Blue would have Articuno. The logos of the teams actually show the outlines of the respective legendary Pokémon.
It seems likely that this could be a way to distribute legendary Pokémon among Trainers. Therefore, you should think carefully about which team you want to join when you reach level 5. If the icy Articuno is one of your favorite Pokémon, you should play it “safe” and join the blue team.
