In Pokémon GO, the popular monsters Kyogre and Groudon are returning. And that brings several reasons for trainers to play.
What’s it about? Niantic announced the Hoenn event, starting on January 15th and active for two weeks. This revolves around Generation 3 in Pokémon GO. At the same time, the bosses in the gyms are changing. Kyogre and Groudon are taking their places back as raid bosses and players are thrilled. But why are they so excited?
Groudon and Kyogre are the best attackers of their types
Why are Groudon and Kyogre important? Both Pokémon are particularly strong and must not be missing from any Pokémon collection.
- Kyogre
- Kyogre is the strongest water attacker in Pokémon GO. It is best used against fire, ground, and rock Pokémon. Because it is particularly effective there.
- The best moveset consists of Waterfall and Hydro Pump.
- You can find our counter guide for Kyogre here
- Groudon
- Groudon is the strongest ground attacker in Pokémon GO. It is effective in battle against fire, electric, poison, rock, and steel Pokémon.
- Its best moveset consists of Mud Shot and Earthquake.

What does this mean for players? If you fight these two Pokémon in the new raids and secure specimens for your collection, you will be well-prepared for future raids, gym battles, and PvP. Many types can be countered with these two Pokémon.
Shiny Groudon? Trainers are hoping for it
The shiny form of Kyogre is already active in Pokémon GO. Therefore, you will have the chance to catch shiny Kyogre through the raid battles of the Hoenn event again. But what about Groudon?
The trainers’ hope: There are many positive reactions on social media regarding the Hoenn event. Trainers are especially excited about the return of Kyogre and Groudon. But questions remain. Player PineMarte writes: “So the real question is, if Kyogre can appear in its shiny form, are they releasing shiny Groudon now? Or should only one of the T5 bosses be catchable as shiny?”
Others firmly believe that shiny Groudon will be released in the game. Player HokTomten writes, “They probably didn’t include Rayquaza in the event because they didn’t want 2 new T5 bosses at the same time. That’s why they are giving us shiny Groudon (new) and shiny Kyogre (old), and Ray will get his own month.”
That would be good: For trainers, this would be a new incentive to participate in many raids. Many players are excited about new shinies, allowing them to expand their collection with another rare Pokémon.
No official shiny Groudon announcement: While many players are hopeful for shiny Groudon, Niantic has not mentioned this shiny form in the announcement. Screenshots of emails are already circulating on social media, supposedly showing how customer support from Pokémon GO has confirmed shiny Groudon. But such screenshots could also be fake, so they should be taken with caution. Whether Rayquaza will be activated as a raid boss is also uncertain. Niantic did not announce it.
Conclusion – Raiding is worthwhile again
- You now get the chance to catch the best water and ground attackers, Kyogre and Groudon
- Finally, useful Pokémon are back in raids
- While Heatran is still quite interesting for trainers, the Regi raids were only annoying for many and there were hardly any good raid bosses afterwards
So if you’re looking for a reason to start raiding again or to return to Pokémon GO in general, these bosses should provide a strong incentive.
