In Pokémon GO the World Championship event is currently taking place, where you can look forward to various spawns and bonuses as well as different event attacks. We at MeinMMO have taken a look at which monsters you should definitely evolve.
What event is it? Currently, in Pokémon GO the big World Championship event is being held to celebrate the Pokémon World Championship in London. Naturally, this event revolves around the theme of “Battling,” which is reflected in the researches and bonuses of the event.
One of these bonuses gives you special event attacks if you evolve selected Pokémon during the event period. We have examined what those attacks are and which monsters are particularly worth it.
How long are the attacks available? You can secure the event attacks throughout the entire event period, specifically from August 18, 2022, at 10:00 AM local time until August 23, 2022, at 8:00 PM local time.
Which 3 evolutions should you get?
What event attacks are there? For the World Championship event, Niantic has selected a total of 5 Pokémon that can learn an event attack when evolved. These attacks are those you already know from the respective previous Community Days and can only be learned outside of such events with a Charged TM or Elite Charged TM.
You can teach the following attacks to these monsters until August 23, 2022:
| Attack | Evolution |
| Rock Wrecker | Rhyperior from Rhydon |
| Shadow Punch | Haunter to Gengar |
| Waterfall | Magikarp to Gyarados |
| Meteor Mash | Metang to Metagross |
| Blast Burn | Dartrix to Talonflame |
Which of the attacks are particularly worth it? Essentially, all of the above event attacks are strong, so you can certainly use them. However, for 3 of the mentioned monsters, the evolution is particularly worthwhile, which we would like to briefly introduce to you below.
Rhyperior
What kind of Pokémon is this? Rhyperior is a Ground and Rock-type Pokémon from the 4th generation. It evolves from Rhydon via Rhyperior. You can recognize this rhinoceros-like Pokémon by its gray-brown body and orange armors.
Why is the evolution worthwhile? Rhyperior is especially interesting for players looking for a strong candidate for raids. It can particularly benefit from high attack and stamina values.
But even the event Charged Attack Rock Wrecker benefits Rhyperior and deals significant damage in combination with the fast move Mud Shot against opponents. Therefore, it is the best Rock-type attacker in Pokémon GO.
In the GO Battle League, Rhyperior scores slightly less compared to other monsters. Only in the Master League is it an option with a moveset of Mud Shot, Rock Wrecker and Surf. But you should better rely on better candidates here.
Is Rhyperior available as Shiny? Yes, with a bit of luck, you can encounter a Shiny Rhyhorn during the World Championship event in Field Research and evolve it to Rhyperior via Rhydon. The shiny Rhyperior can be recognized by its grayish body and yellow armors.
Note with Rhyperior, however, that you need to use a Sinnoh Stone to evolve it. Where you can find this and which evolutions are worthwhile can be read in our following article:
Metagross
What kind of Pokémon is this? The Steel and Psychic-type Pokémon Metagross is from the 3rd generation and is the final evolution of Beldum. During the World Championship event, you can find Beldum in the Field Research and evolve it to Metang accordingly. You can recognize it by its typical metallic appearance.
Why is the evolution worthwhile? Metagross is a true all-rounder and is thus well-suited for use in raids as well as in the GO Battle League. In both areas, it can rely on the event attack Meteor Mash, which causes significant damage to opponents.
Its attack and defense values are also impressive. With a moveset of Bullet Punch and Meteor Mash, it quickly forces its opponents to surrender as one of the best attackers in Pokémon GO.
In PvP fights, Metagross is a good option, especially in the Master League. Here, it is best to rely on an attack combination of Bullet Punch, Meteor Mash, and Earthquake.
Is Metagross available as Shiny? Yes, with a bit of luck, you can catch a Shiny Beldum and evolve it to Shiny Metagross. The Metagross then differs from its normal variant by a yellow cross-like decoration in front of its eyes as well as yellow feet.
Talonflame
What kind of Pokémon is this? Talonflame is a Fire and Flying-type Pokémon from the 6th generation. It has the two pre-evolutions Fletchling and Fletchinder. You can recognize Talonflame by its bird of prey-like body and its red-gray plumage.
Why is the evolution worthwhile? Unlike the other evolutions on this list, Talonflame is somewhat weaker in attack, stamina, and defense. However, you should definitely secure this Pokémon with its event fast attack Blast Burn.
With this, it can perform particularly well in the Ultra League. So, Talonflame ranks 16th in the PvPoke ranking there with a moveset of Blast Burn, Brave Bird, and Flame Charge. So, if you like to participate in PvP battles, you should take advantage of this opportunity and evolve one.
Is Talonflame available as Shiny? Yes, Shiny Talonflame is already available in the game. Here too, you first need to catch a shiny Fletchling and then evolve it accordingly. Visually, the shiny version only differs by a slightly darker red coloration of the feathers and a brown body from the normal form.
Are the attacks of Gyarados and Gengar also strong?
Gyarados: The Water and Flying-type Pokémon is also a true all-rounder, but can impress especially in the GO Battle League with the event attack. Its Shadow variant ranks 35th in the Ultra League and 17th in the Master League of the PvPoke ranking with a moveset of Hydro Pump, Waterfall, and Crunch.
In raids, it also belongs to the best attackers in Pokémon GO, but you should rather rely on a move combination of Waterfall and Hydro Pump here. Thus, it is mainly interesting for trainers in the GO Battle League.
Gengar: The final evolution of Gastly can particularly shine with its high attack value and thus ranks among the best attackers. However, the Ghost and Poison-type Pokémon tends to rely more on other attacks such as a moveset of Shadow Claw and Sludge Bomb.
In the GO Battle League, the event attack Shadow Punch is used, but Gengar only ranks 72nd in the Ultra League. And even in the Super and Master Leagues, it plays hardly any role.
The attack could particularly come into play with Mega Gengar in Rocket Battles, as it is relatively quickly charged and takes down the opponent’s shields quickly.
What do you think of the Charged Attacks for the World Championship event? Which monsters will you evolve? Or would you have preferred other moves and Pokémon? Feel free to share your opinion here on MeinMMO in the comments and exchange ideas with other trainers.
During the World Championship event, you will also have the chance to secure an additional limited research through promo codes. Here we have compiled an overview of all codes for you.
