For the PlayStation VR, a camera is necessary to experience virtual reality with Sony’s PS4. You can purchase either the old model or the “2016” version.
Since October 13th, the PS VR has been on the market. Those who managed to secure one of these headsets at release are lucky: Because the PlayStation VR is completely sold out, and there are only a few options to get the PS VR early.
However, the VR headset alone is not enough to dive into VR gaming. The following hardware is needed:
- A “PlayStation 4” console: PS4, PS4 Slim, or PS4 Pro
- The “PlayStation VR” headset
- A PS4 camera
- A Dualshock controller
- Optional: Two Move controllers: These are not strictly necessary, but they enhance the fun of some VR games.
While many gamers already have a PS4 and the controller in their living rooms, the camera for VR enjoyment is still missing. The camera is essential; without it, the PSVR headset does not work. However, the PS4 camera is not included with the purchase of the VR headset. You will need to buy it separately. Although a PSVR bundle with PlayStation camera is planned, it will only be available in Germany in the future.
One of these PS4 cameras is necessary for gaming
There are two PS4 cameras on the market, both of which support PlayStation VR:
- PS4 Camera (2013):
- PS4 Camera (2016):
While the older model costs 45 Euros on Amazon, the “2016” model comes in at nearly 60 Euros. The latter camera launched on October 13, 2016, simultaneously with the PlayStation VR. What’s interesting is that the technical specifications of the cameras hardly differ from each other.
The newer version comes with a fresh design and a “tripod”, which allows you to adjust it better. According to the product description, the new camera has four microphones for precise sound detection and localization. Moreover, the precision in recognizing the LED lights is said to be greater than ever before. The new model is somewhat lighter and proves to be more user-friendly.
Nevertheless: Even the older, cheaper PS4 camera supports PlayStation VR. You must decide for yourself which one you would like to purchase.
