When it comes to Virtual Reality, Sony clearly has the upper hand! Neither the main competitors Oculus Rift nor HTC Vive can even come close to the PlayStation developer.
Sony’s PlayStation VR headset is the leader among virtual reality providers. With a solid 30 percent market share, Sony’s headset dominates. The competing products Oculus Rift and HTC Vive are far behind, according to market research firm 01consulting. Curiously, Virtual Reality is less successful than expected according to the market analysis by SuperData.
PlayStation VR far ahead
For the market analysis, 01consulting has listed the sales of more than 40 products from a total of 30 relevant companies over several months. The result: PlayStation VR accounts for almost a third of the sales, thus having a market share of 30 percent! The Oculus Rift only has 11 percent and the HTC Vive a meager 6 percent market share in the VR business. The remaining shares are distributed among many companies that only offer VR technology but no hardware, as well as low-cost device variants like Google Cardboard.
But what is the reason for the success of PlayStation VR? On one hand, it’s clearly due to the comparatively low price of the device. It costs “only” around 400 euros, while an Oculus Rift costs 700 euros, almost twice as much. The HTC Vive is priced similarly. Additionally, using Sony’s headset on the PlayStation is straightforward and doesn’t require expensive hardware, and thanks to the large number of PS4 players, there is a broad target audience.
