The Playstation VR offers a special feature called Cinematic Mode. This allows you to display the user interface of the Playstation 4 and almost all non-VR games and apps on a simulated screen in VR. We explain what it’s all about.
Virtual worlds are nice and all, but what about system settings? Do you have to awkwardly take off the Playstation VR headset every time you want to adjust something on the console itself? Not at all, because thanks to the so-called Cinematic Mode, we can also access the settings in the virtual world.
A virtual screen
Here’s how it works: In Cinematic Mode, the VR headset projects a virtual screen that is located between one and three meters away from us in the simulated space. The screen itself can have a diagonal size of 117 to 226 inches, making it potentially larger than your own TV!
Especially cool: In Cinematic Mode, we can also play almost all regular Playstation games that are not VR. We then see the game in the VR world and play there. It’s like a virtual world within another virtual world! Almost every game supports this feature; only games like “The Playroom” or “Teraway Unfolded” are left out, as these games use the Playstation 4 camera.
In addition to games, we can also use other apps on the Playstation 4 and watch movies in the virtual space, for example. Frame rate drops and performance fluctuations are reportedly not an issue. Only 3D movies and games will be displayed in 2D in the VR space. Sony has not yet released further information on this topic.
