From March 2019, PS Plus members will only receive one third of the current monthly game lineup. What does this mean for players?
For years, the monthly game lineup of PlayStation Plus has included 6 free games:
- 2 PS4 games
- 2 PS3 games
- and 2 PS Vita games.
Additionally, there have been and will be extra bonus titles or games that can be played on multiple platforms in some months.
These “free games” are included in the subscription of the online service, which costs just under 60 euros for 12 months.
In 2019, Sony is breaking the known game lineup: From March 8, 2019, there will be no more PS Plus games for PS3 and PS Vita. Monthly, there will only be free games for PS4.
What does this PS Plus change mean for players?
This means for you: February 2019 will be the last month in which you will receive free games for PS3 and PS Vita. From then on, the focus will be solely on PS4.
- If for this reason you no longer want to be a PS Plus member because you only use the online service for PS3 or PS Vita, you should now turn off the automatic renewal of the PS Plus subscription so that you are not charged any additional costs beyond March 2019.
- If you are using PS Plus only for your PlayStation 4 anyway, not much will change for you. In response to a question from Polygon, a Sony spokesperson confirmed that from March 2019, there will only be two PS4 games in the PS Plus lineup. So, no more PS4 games will be available for free monthly, but you will still receive two as standard.
- In other words, if you currently use PS Plus for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita, you will lose two-thirds of your free games in 2019.
Further official information from Sony:
- The change will not affect the PS Plus games that you have already downloaded or will download by March 2019. As long as your membership continues, these games will remain in your library.
- Your game saves and other benefits from PS Plus will also remain unchanged.
Sony justifies this step by stating that many gamers already own a PS4 platform and more PS4 consoles are constantly being adopted into households around the world. The focus should therefore be fully on the current console from 2019 onwards.
Additionally, they emphasize that PS4 users can still look forward to the benefits of PS Plus in the future: online multiplayer features, monthly games for PS4, online storage for game saves, and exclusive discounts for content and network services in the PS Store.
