Players in Destiny 2 were excited about the free event Rite of the Nine, which was scheduled to start on April 1, 2025. Some were able to experience the new content right now – but that was not planned at all.
What event is it about? In a livestream on March 4, Bungie announced new content for the upcoming act of the current episode “Heresy”. In addition to a new mode with roguelike mechanics and a limited-time PvP mode, the upcoming event “Rite of the Nine” was one of the big highlights.
Especially beginners were looking forward to being able to play dungeons as part of the limited-time event. We reported on MeinMMO about how much the usually strict Destiny community was excited about the announcements.
The event was supposed to start on April 1, 2025 – but instead, it went live in the late evening hours of March 11 our time.
What is going on? As Destiny Bulletin shared on X, the 3 dungeons of the event – Prophecy, Guardian’s Pillar, Depths of the Spirits – are already playable. In addition, the weapons that should come with the event have already started dropping in-game.
Although these weapons are placeholder versions, they were already playable even without proper texture.
The unfinished look of the weapons is also an indicator that this early launch is not a planned surprise for the fans, but rather that someone accidentally pressed the big, red “Live” button early.
In a statement on Bluesky, the Destiny 2 team confirmed that it was an accidental rollout and announced that they would quickly lock access to the content. The content is still “in the oven”, but they are very excited to release the finished versions.
So if you are reading this article, you probably won’t have the chance to test out the new event early anymore. But at least the developers are letting you have some fun with a bug: Players want to keep a bug in Destiny 2, even Bungie says: “Have some fun with it for a while”
