The development of the MMO shooter Anthem was discontinued 3 years ago, but the game still enjoys a loyal fan base. On reddit, a plan has now been put forward to force EA to develop an Anthem 2.0 with violence.
What is the situation with Anthem?
- The MMO shooter Anthem, also known as “The game where everyone is Iron Man”, was released in February 2019.
- The problem was that BioWare barely finished the game at release and then the team broke apart: The original team at BioWare was unable to push out new content. Later, it was said that the SWTOR MMO team should first address the game’s problems with major updates.
- In February 2020, BioWare announced a major overhaul. For a year, it was uncertain how Anthem would proceed. They were developing and preparing an “Anthem Next”. But ultimately, EA discontinued Anthem in February 2021, 3 years ago.
“Anthem deserves a second chance”
This is the current status: Even though Anthem has failed in the eyes of the general public and was a flop, the game has found many fans with its strong gameplay loop and unique aesthetics who still enjoy and appreciate it today.
They fantasize about how great it could have been if EA had continued to develop Anthem.
In a post on reddit, they are now calling, 3 years after the end: “Let’s bring Anthem back.” If No Man’s Sky and Cyberpunk 2077 got a second chance, then surely Anthem could do it too, they say.
They ask fans to post the hashtag #reviveanthem on social media and to prompt EA for a statement.
Is it going to work? No, probably not. There were some posts on Twitter with the hashtag on February 9, but nothing significant.
A player says nothing has equaled Anthem since. But the hashtag wave fades quickly.
However: It is impressive that the reddit post received 2200 upvotes and 628 comments. For a game that has been dead for 3 years, that is quite unusual.
This shows what potential Anthem had and how unfortunate it is that so little was done with so much. Today, EA surely regrets the title.
Bitterness towards EA dominates the discussion
How are people discussing it? There is a great longing for Anthem, it can be read repeatedly about the game. Many think back to the title with love and nostalgia. They loved the feeling of soaring through the air with their hero, diving down on enemies, and overwhelming them with a hail of rockets.
But under the thread at Anthem, there is also a lot of cynicism against EA. They have sunk many great games, such as Titanfall. EA is said to be “deaf to feedback”. They only care about profit. One can rage, scream, and even hack a game – nothing will happen as long as EA does not sniff a juicy profit.
CD Projekt Red never gave up on Cyberpunk, but EA gave up on Anthem, it is said, and one can almost feel the salt on the tongue.
By now, a lot of nostalgia has probably been replaced by bitterness.
