Bots in WoW: Classic are annoying. However, some players have clever ideas on how to deal with the bots and outsmart them.
Anyone currently playing World of Warcraft Classic and farming in the endgame areas, such as in the Plaguelands, has likely encountered some annoying characters. We are talking about bots that automatically kill and farm the mobs without actually being controlled by a player. Not only do they take loot away from “real” players, but they also disrupt the economy of a realm by flooding the auction house with resources.
However, one player shows how to handle the bots to at least disable them for a while.
What happened? On the European realm Dreadmist, many bots roam – just like on other realms. The Night Elf Priestess Illadin had apparently had enough of this and tried to find a solution to the bot problem. She succeeded. She lured the bots across the Eastern Plaguelands to the back entrance of the dungeon Stratholme. There, she took control of the bots’ characters with the spell “Mind Control” and led them behind the instance portal of the dungeon. Once the bots could be controlled again, they tried to catch up with the priestess and were teleported into the dungeon.

Why does it work? The bots in WoW Classic can now act relatively intelligently, maintaining certain rotations when casting spells, but are otherwise quite simple. It seems that the priest’s Mind Vision is perceived as a “hostile spell” by the bots, causing them to chase after the priest. This allows the priest to lead the bots to the entrance of Stratholme and subsequently trap them in the dungeon.
Inside the dungeon, the bots apparently have no waypoints and thus cannot orient themselves sensibly to continue their farming work. The bot is effectively deactivated until the owner returns and manually sets it back on its route.
Why not just kill the bots? Simply killing the bots does not lead to success. Most of them are “good enough” that they just walk back to their corpse, heal themselves, and sometimes even have a repair scheduled in their path.
Players demand ban wave: Actions like those of the priestess are nice but only a drop in the ocean. Just yesterday, we wrote that many players of WoW Classic are calling for a crackdown on bots. They wish for a new ban wave from Blizzard.
Whether this will happen will surely be revealed in the coming weeks. At least, this issue is unlikely to be addressed by Blizzard during the holidays.
