Despite decreasing player numbers, Battlefield 2042 is still being developed and receiving updates. One of them introduced the scoreboard today, a long-requested feature. However, it didn’t appease the fans.
How is Battlefield 2042 doing?
- Since its release, the new shooter has been struggling with issues – so many, that over 200,000 players want their money back.
- Despite the harsh criticism, work on the game is expected to continue, some important fixes have already been implemented.
- Today, on March 8, a new update finally brought a long-awaited feature to the game.
What’s included in the update? In the official blog post, the developers discuss the contents of the update. It mainly includes bug fixes and control issues, as well as some new bundles.
However, what resonates most with the fans is the scoreboard, a feature that many players believe should have been in the game since its release. Battlefield 2042 initially had only a stripped-down version but now offers a proper display of players’ stats, after the update was delayed several times:
On reddit, the feature is generally welcomed. It’s nice to finally see how well one really is compared to others. But it all comes too late; no one can be brought back now.
The overall mood in the community on both reddit and Twitter leans towards mockery. Fans seem to no longer trust the game and are mostly laughing at the excuses that were previously sought.
Not many players left on Steam, but it’s the others’ fault
According to the data site steamcharts, Battlefield 2042 has an average of only about 2,500 players in the last 30 days on Steam. That’s fewer than predecessors Battlefield V and Battlefield 1.
Accordingly, there is mockery that with the new scoreboard, one can only measure how good one is compared to bots. The lobbies are full of them.
For some time now, the atmosphere on reddit has been so negative, that there was consideration to shut it down directly. Nowadays, the mood is no longer purely hostile but has become quite cynical.
The reason for this is primarily a statement that EA made earlier. Many of the unpopular changes in Battlefield 2042 were supposedly made to focus more on multiplayer, as nobody wanted single-player anymore – at least that’s how it was perceived.
For instance, the campaign was removed from the game, and instead of generic classes, there are specialists with special abilities. One of the biggest memes in the general gaming reddit was made after the successful release of Elden Ring, stating that it couldn’t possibly be because people no longer want single-player titles:
However, EA has particularly made itself unpopular with the search for scapegoats, which eventually landed on elite gamers – just not on their own decisions, which fans view as flawed.
With the scoreboard and further updates, Battlefield 2042 now wants to show once again that they do listen to their community and implement criticism. At least that’s what it says in the blog post. Whether that will be enough now remains to be seen. At least some lessons seem to have been learned from past mistakes:
