In Pokémon TCG Pocket, the special ex-cards have an advantage over the regular cards. To avoid battles against strong ex-decks, players have now taken advantage of the private battle feature.
What are ex-cards? Ex-cards are special cards in Pokémon TCG Pocket that have more HP than regular cards and stronger attacks.
A normal Charizard card, for example, has 150 HP and the attack Fire Spin with 150 damage points, while the ex-card has 180 HP and two attacks, with 80 and 200 damage points each.

Private battles without ex-cards
What is the problem with ex-cards? Ex-cards are so superior to regular cards that the likelihood of winning with a normal deck against an ex-deck is low. This creates an imbalance between the players since ex-cards are very rare.
Moreover, many still require pre-evolutions, like the Gengar ex card. Thus, not only must the ex-card itself be drawn, but also the pre-evolutions.
The difference between F2P players and paying players is particularly noticeable in this way. Paying players have much higher chances of having multiple ex-cards in their decks.
What is the solution? To engage in a private battle, both players must enter the same password. The idea emerged on Reddit that players who wish to play with a deck without ex-cards and only want opponents like that should simply use the private battle feature.
The password is determined by what is expected in the player’s deck:
- noex: Both decks are without any ex-cards
- 1ex: Both decks have one ex-card each
- abc: Only A-, B- or C-tier decks are used; thus, less powerful decks
This way, all players can enjoy the battles, even if they do not want to invest money in the mobile game. Additionally, new strategies can be tested, or new players can familiarize themselves with the mechanics first.
