Currently, we are observing an interesting phenomenon: More and more players of the MMORPG Guild Wars 2 are switching to Final Fantasy 14. We have researched why this is happening.
What is going on in the Guild Wars 2 community? That occasionally individual players switch MMORPGs is not unusual. However, when entire guilds migrate, something is wrong. And that is exactly what is currently happening with Guild Wars 2.
More and more players and guilds are currently switching to Final Fantasy XIV. There are so many players that “refugee guilds” are even being formed to help the newcomers.
GW2 fans are disappointed
Why are players leaving? Many are upset about how ArenaNet is currently handling GW2. Hardly any new content or updates are released. The time between expansions and new story content is simply too long for many.
Especially in an online game, it is important that fans are regularly provided with new content, and that is simply not happening with Guild Wars 2 at the moment.
In addition, players are currently waiting for ArenaNet to talk about the future of the MMORPG in general. What does the roadmap look like for the coming months? What is planned for 2020? Players are left in the dark here, which is simply frustrating.

What do fans wish for? Having new additions to the Living Story from time to time is simply not enough. Although there are now some events, for many this is just a “stopgap”. Quality-of-Life features have also been improved. Fans are truly demanding substantial new content. Epic stories and also some fundamental innovations in the game.
At the moment, Guild Wars 2 feels to some in the community like it is stagnating. Only every now and then does a new episode of the Living Story arrive, and then it’s back to waiting for a while. Here, fans simply wish for “more”.
Too little is happening in the MMORPG
Why are players specifically migrating to Final Fantasy XIV? For many, FF14 is currently considered the best MMORPG. Not just in terms of the game itself but also because of the support with new content.
Recently, the major expansion Shadowbringers was released, which is considered one of the best contents of the online role-playing game. Additionally, smaller updates come at regular intervals, which also bring more content.

Communication is also important for many. While ArenaNet is rather silent, the developers of FF14 talk a lot about their game and what is planned.
This pleases MMORPG fans, which is why Final Fantasy 14 is currently so successful and now attracting Guild Wars 2 players.
This is what GW2 players currently think: On Reddit, a discussion about this migration is taking place. We have picked out some sentiments for you:
- Tenbroseidon writes on Reddit: “A large number of players from my guild have switched to FFX14, but overall many people have stopped playing. Content is coming too rarely.”
- Namondwe says: “This is not surprising. FF14 has just released a huge expansion right in the middle of a drought for GW2. People go where the action is.”
- ChmSteki explains: “Honestly, Guild Wars 2 is running like this, you play it for two days and then wait three months for new content. That seems to be ArenaNet’s philosophy, which they just don’t want to change.”
Also in the FFXIV subreddit some Guild Wars 2 players have already reported in a thread and conducted a long discussion about why they switched.
A similar situation occurred earlier this year, when players from World of Warcraft fled to Final Fantasy XIV.
