In Destiny 2, 4 planets will soon disappear from the scene, and players will be sent once again to the most beautiful places they will soon have to do without.
Do planets die in Destiny 2? For some time now, the rumor has been circulating in the community that a whole planet is to be destroyed, thus removing the location along with its quests, NPCs, and activities. Since Season 11, it has been known that players will have to bid farewell to 4 locations.
Therefore, the evacuation of half the solar system is at hand. Preparations have been in full swing since June 7. Players must visit the four affected planets (and moons) to deliver the news of destruction – this all culminates soon in a major quest, which rewards Guardians with a new exotic.
This is what happens to the locations: The reason for the disappearance is cooly embedded in the story of the MMO. The players’ arch-nemesis, the Darkness, finally arrives in the solar system after 6 years with great fanfare.
The harbingers of darkness are mysterious pyramid ships. These are now omnipresent and are blamed for the disappearance of the locations.
By the way, this also has gameplay implications: The planets are not being removed permanently. They are just saying goodbye for a (still unknown) while and could return in similar or altered form in the coming years.
With the absence of locations, Destiny 2 primarily buys itself space – this will be used to bring new locations into the game. Even favorites from Destiny 1 are expected to return in modern garb.
Players also hope that performance will improve due to the streamlining treatment. In other words: Loading times and stutter should become less of a nuisance. Whether this actually happens will only be known in the fall of 2020 – when the planets disappear and the next chapter “Destiny 2: Beyond Light” begins.
What the disappearance and exchange of content means is explained by MeinMMO in this article:
This is how the farewell is received by the players
Initially, there was mainly disbelief, anger, and sadness. Hardly anyone thought a few weeks ago that 4 planets would actually disappear from the game. Meanwhile, players seem to be in the phase of acceptance and even find kind words on the topic.
Players thank for a collection quest: Currently, Destiny 2 “forces” its players with quests to collect a whopping 75 items spread across the vanishing locations. Some of them are in places that most Guardians have never visited.
- For the exotic “Fallen’s Image”, 25 Calcified Lights must be tracked down
- 50 eyes of a Witch Queen are waiting to be found on the dying planet
The Guardians say (via reddit), that they found the collection quest anything but boring. Some are grateful to visit the most beautiful places on the planets one last time through the quests – Destiny 2 is practically holding a farewell.
It is also positively highlighted that there is a bittersweet atmosphere of farewell. Although not everyone is satisfied with the disappearance, players agree that there could have been worse ways to say goodbye to the planets. Soon there will also be the multi-week evacuation, which will truly be the (for now) final farewell.
In the fall, a new activity that is very dear to the players will also be saying goodbye: Destiny 2 is losing a new dungeon at the end of Season 11 – But not forever
