An important part of Pokémon GO is the interaction with friends. However, the reddit community is currently complaining about the gift scrooges. We from MeinMMO have looked into what this is about and explain to you the reasons trainers have.
What happened? In Pokémon GO, each trainer can have up to 400 friends with whom they can interact daily. This is possible, for example, through battling each other, trading, and opening gifts.
With each day that an interaction takes place, the friendship level between these two players increases. However, the sending and opening of gifts often leads to discussions within the community. We will show you why.
That’s why trainers complain about gift scrooges
In order to raise the friendship level, daily interactions must take place. Many trainers try to achieve this interaction by regularly opening gifts. This includes the reddit user SplitBeanz, who shared a picture of two trainers just before the final level-up. He writes: “JUST OPEN YOUR GIFTS!!!”.
In the comments on his post, it quickly becomes clear that he is not alone in this situation. Many trainers know similar situations and also have players in their friend list who do not open their gifts.
However, the affected trainers can sometimes do nothing about it if they do not open their gifts. They have good reasons to withhold some gifts.
The reasons for the gift scrooges
After the reddit post by SplitBeanz, user lifeuncommon also shared his discontent about this topic and sheds light on the other side, namely that of the trainers who do not open their gifts.
He writes: “You can only open 20 gifts per day, but you can have 400 friends. People don’t open your gifts because they can’t, not because they don’t want to. Blame Niantic.” (via reddit.com).
In his further text, he explains that while the limit is sometimes raised to 30 or 40 gifts throughout the year due to time-limited events by Niantic, it is still not enough given the number of friends.
In fact, this is a significant problem that has existed for some time and is frequently discussed on social media. Many trainers would like to open their friends’ gifts daily, but the gift limit imposed by Niantic restricts them.
XP bonus: But there are also other reasons why trainers do not open their gifts. Trainers can earn particularly many experience points (XP) during the last friendship level-up. If they also use a lucky egg, they can double the amount from 100,000 XP to 200,000 XP.
This gives many players the incentive for a specific day, such as Community Day in February, to accumulate as many level-ups as possible and then open them consecutively. This way, only one lucky egg needs to be used.
Other reasons: But reaching the storage limit for items also plays a crucial role for some trainers according to the comments. Furthermore, it costs individual players too much time.
Trainers demand changes to gifts
Some trainers in the reddit community are now demanding a change to the gift limit as well as an improved functionality for opening and sending gifts. Here’s what the comments say (via reddit.com):
- Flollyy: “I don’t understand why there is even a limit. We should be able to send and open gifts as much as we want.”
- magnagan: “There shouldn’t be a limit. Or at least, adjust the limit to the number of friends. Also: do we really need so many steps/animations to open and send gifts?”
- djstanz0: “Can we have a quality improvement by selecting X friends and sending/opening gifts instead of opening them one by one?”
New feature: Additionally, they would like another new feature. Some trainers suggest that there should be a reminder system that shows the trainers after a certain period that they still have unopened gifts. It should also be clear how old the gift is:
- NevaMO (via reddit.com): “A few changes I would like to make regarding gifts and friends, I’d like to see how long a specific friend hasn’t played, not just ‘2+ days ago.’ I’d also like to see how old a gift is…that’s the same scenario as ‘2+ days ago’…”
- uc3gfpnq (via reddit.com): “I think ‘1 day, 2 days, 2+ days, 1 week, 1 week+, 2 weeks, 2 weeks+, 1 month, 1 month+’ is frequent enough to get the idea. Or, if they could spare server space, show the number of days since the last activity (up to 2 months or so).”
- freedomboogers89 (via reddit.com): “I would also appreciate a reminder message that you can send them to remind to open the gift.”
Whether Niantic will make changes regarding the friend list and gifts to facilitate daily interaction remains to be seen. If there is any information about it, you will find out here on MeinMMO.
Do you also have friends in your list who do not open your gifts? Or do you only have a limited circle of other trainers with whom you interact? What changes would you like to see in the friend list and with gifts? Feel free to share your thoughts here on MeinMMO in the comments and exchange ideas with other trainers.
For me, opening gifts is also a big topic, which is why I explain to you why you shouldn’t open your gifts thoughtlessly.
