Many players use the SOS signal in Monster Hunter Wilds to play together with other hunters. Others wish for help and support in their hunt. However, some grinders are now abusing this function and leaving these players out in the rain.
A feature to help distressed players: SOS signals serve as an opening of one’s quest for other players in Monster Hunter Wilds. Hunters can then specifically search for open SOS signals at Alma’s quest counter and join them. This allows up to 4 players to participate in a hunt simultaneously.
Recently, however, it has become more common for players to join quests, take a quick look at the monster, and then disappear from the quest again. This has caused frustration in the community, as many players genuinely want support or at least want to hunt monsters together with other hunters in peace.
The Hunt for Crowns Ruins the Gaming Experience
Why are players doing this? The reason seems to be a common method of searching for monsters for specific achievements and farming them, as user Pockpocks shares in his thread on Reddit.
- Players are likely joining quests with SOS signals to look through the binoculars to see if the monster has a silver or gold crown.
- If the monster has a crown, these players would finish the quest as quickly as possible and move on to the next monster.
- However, if the monster does not have a crown, the players withdraw from the quest and simply leave the signal senders behind.
This way, they hope for quick kills of crowned monsters, as they usually join quests that are somewhat advanced in time. This leads to the monsters often having lost considerable health, making the quest quick to complete for those joining.
How does the community respond? Pockpocks therefore urges these players in his post to reuse the SOS signal as it was originally intended: to complete quests together and to help other hunters.
Among the comments, there are many who share similar sentiments and wish for better behavior from the grinders:
- satans_cookiemallet comments: “The crowns will be around until the last update of the expansion. Helping a fellow hunter in need is timeless.”
- Screwed_38 writes: “At least the lobby spots reopen after someone leaves, unlike in World.”
- Kemuri1 condemns: “I thought SOS was basically for ‘Hey, I want to play with a few people,’ but yeah, it’s disgusting behavior to farm crowns like that. Wow.”
- thewiredknight shares: “I wondered why this happens. I respond to SOS signals because that’s how I get the materials I need from monsters while helping someone at the same time.”
- CruisinBlade notes: “I’ve never experienced this. But it seems like such an inefficient method, lmao. Just load an online match to do that, lol, just reset the world or join a community looking for crowns. Seems like a huge waste of time.”
Players hope that the situation will calm down soon or that the grinders will resort to other methods to achieve their accomplishments.
Some players also generally find it not fast enough. Some Japanese players have recently reached the maximum hunter rank in record time, raising the question in the community of how this is possible: Players reach hunter rank 999 in Monster Hunter Wilds in record time – How is this possible?
