Some players are complaining to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare about bad pings and partially unplayable lobbies. Now it has come to light that a bug at Infinity Ward is responsible for this. What is going on?
Where is the problem? To perform well in the fast-paced multiplayer of the action shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, you need strong nerves, steady hands, but also a good internet connection.
Currently, some players are complaining about lobbies with high pings and poor matchmaking. The ping is a good indicator of connection quality, as it shows the time it takes for data to travel from the player to the server and back.
Apparently, there was a problem with the last patch, causing some players to remain on the old multiplayer version of Modern Warfare and thus not being able to play with the majority of players.
Update of Modern Warfare did not reach all players – Patch problems
Why are there these bad lobbies? The versions of the affected players were not properly patched. If you don’t download a current update for a multiplayer title immediately, you often cannot play with others.
In some cases, the game or the multiplayer mode cannot start correctly. The game demands the patch, and sometimes the only option left is the solo mode.
How could this happen? According to Infinity Ward, there is a problem in the “backend.” The current issue with Modern Warfare concerns the patch system. Apparently, some players are unable to pull the latest patch from the CoD servers.
What are the consequences? Players with the old patch can only be matched with players who are also still equipped with the old version.
The Redditor “Lolsrofl” shared a picture of his match on the new map Crash, and a bunch of players with high pings can be seen, especially in his own team.

The high pings lead to a poor connection and lags. A ping of 200 ms allows only 5 updates per second, while the M4, for example, fires nearly 13 rounds per second. This makes the problem clear.
Developers say: Update is coming
What do the developers say about this? The communications manager “Ashton Williams”, also known to many as “ashtonisVULCAN”, reacted on reddit to the large thread on the subject and made it clear that the developers are working on it. Statements about matchmaking are actually rather rare.
Hey OP – Thanks for your post. We have investigated the problem and want to share what has happened. We have discovered a bug in our patch system that prevents some players from receiving the patch correctly. This means that a small percentage of players cannot connect with the large player base that already has the new patch. […] We are actively working on a fix for our backend and will overhaul our entire patch system with the next title update to prevent this from happening again in the future. I hope this gives you a little insight and apologies for the bug!

Williams explains that the problem lies with the servers of Modern Warfare. Matchmaking is a sensitive topic in recent weeks, and the thread received a lot of support. The response from a responsible person helped to smooth things over a bit.
Modern Warfare players can hardly do anything
What can I do if I am affected? Without the help of the developers, you can hardly do anything here. As a player, you actually have no direct influence on the backend and cannot just fetch the update yourself.
However, you can contact Ashton Williams. She is active on Twitter and often responds to serious concerns from players. Take a screenshot of the lobby, like the one in the picture above, and tweet it to @ashtonisVULCAN. The tweet should be in English, though.
The authorities are actively trying to engage with their community and also aim to adjust updates and changes to the priorities of players. They asked players who have already stopped playing CoD, what they would need to change to play Modern Warfare again.
Did you also have the bug with the broken update? Did you perhaps inquired about another problem on Twitter or Reddit with the developers and received a response?
