If there is criticism of Baldur’s Gate 3, it is mainly about the combat system. This still causes problems today – until you jump over your own shadow.
That Baldur’s Gate 3 was an absolute mega success is something that probably doesn’t need to be told to anyone today. But there are indeed some buyers who are not so fond of the game. Especially the combat system can be overwhelming, complex, or simply confusing and frustrating for newcomers to the genre. Because if you don’t understand all the possibilities the game offers, many conflicts end in the annihilation of your own party.
In a post on the Baldur’s Gate 3 Subreddit, Henryh0over2 talks about his experiences with the game. Initially, he was not enthusiastic about the combat system at all and even hated it. He reports this in the post “I hated combat until I stopped behaving like a caveman”.
I really loved the role-playing and the world of this game, but the combat was so frustrating. I just kept running headfirst into fights and died almost every time.
I made it to the Goblin Camp and died about 5 times or so, always to that Hobgoblin leader, until I started tactically positioning my characters on the map. My rogue on the upper floor shot the goblins from stealth, Karlach in the middle, while Gale and Shadowheart placed spells near the ladders and then it just clicked.
Slowly, it is becoming one of the best games I have ever played.
One realization that is apparently also praised in the community, as the post has now received over 1,500 upvotes and a lot of comments.
The community gives even more tips: The community quickly steps in and gives him many more tips on how to make the fights even more enjoyable and interesting. Because to really enjoy Baldur’s Gate 3, you have to forget most of what you’ve learned about video games – otherwise, you won’t see all the options Baldur’s Gate 3 offers.
- “Now the fun begins. Don’t be afraid of it, and try crazy/creative things. You can interact with most objects and they can also be thrown, including enemies. Throwing goblins at each other with Karlach is just fun, and some of the consumables you can get are also very useful.” – dmfuller
- “I totally get it! This is not a typical RPG where you just run in with your team and shoot everything until you win. I had to run away from fights and only managed that by tossing a grease bottle that made the enemies slip. It’s a lot of fun, but sometimes also very frustrating.” – Comfortable-Bus-8840
Nevertheless, there are always people who would have preferred an option in Baldur’s Gate 3 to activate a “real-time” combat mode. But that would probably have caused too many problems given the complexity of the abilities and the tactical nuances. If you want to give the game another chance – if you find a special cutscene, you could be in for €470.
Have you managed to come to terms with the combat system in Baldur’s Gate 3 and learned to love the tactical intricacies and possibilities? Or has the system also put you off?
