In Baldur’s Gate 3, there was a bug that allowed players to take all of the merchants’ goods without paying for them. The developer team at Larian Studios addressed this by removing the bug. Now, players are becoming increasingly inventive – and brutal.
What kind of bug is it? Players could obtain items from merchants by using a trick. They simply had to put the offered items into a barrel, a box, or another storage container that was nearby.
To do this, they had to drag the item’s icon into the container. After the conversation, the merchant’s goods were inside the respective item and could be retrieved without the players having to pay.
Larian Studios addressed this bug and removed it with Patch 7. The developer stated:
Another trade exploit was fixed, where items from merchants could be taken without paying when they were moved into a container by dragging to the container’s icon. That’s enough now.

However, fans found a new method to still rob merchants of all their items. With Patch 7, Larian encouraged players to become even more evil through suitable endings, but they probably did not expect such a brutal method.

Players rob merchants in a brutal way
How does the new trick work? In the Reddit forum, user CCYellow explains in point 11 how to still rob merchants. Normally, merchants leave only part of their goods when they are killed by players. However, there is a way to secure the complete inventory of the merchant:
- Sell a merchant items like barrels or wooden boxes
- Place the entire inventory of the merchant into these containers
- Kill the merchant (or knock him unconscious, depending on your preferred method)
- Grab the containers filled with the merchant’s goods
This method is said to prevent any items from being lost that would normally disappear when killing the merchants. The merchants in Baldur’s Gate 3 are likely facing tough times ahead, as many players will use this trick to make their lives difficult.
What was in Patch 7? The patch not only brought a ton of new content and bug fixes but also the official mod support that players have been eagerly waiting for. The patch was actually supposed to be the last major update. However, as an employee of Larian revealed, the patch is not the end: Baldur’s Gate 3 is “finished” with Patch 7 – A boss now says: There is more to come
