If you don’t want to cheat or mod in Starfield, you might quickly find yourself on an alien planet with an inventory full of “essential” items, thousands of meters away from the ship’s container. Here are 5 tips from players that will help you.
On the discussion platform Reddit, a huge thread has formed on the topic of “Overload Management”. 17,000 upvotes and over 1,400 comments show how important this topic is in Starfield.
Players share tips and thank each other for the helpful advice. User “emodwarf” says: “Thank you. I have been playing for 50 hours, but I didn’t know that.” (via reddit.com).
MeinMMO has sifted through the big thread and found 5 tips for you on how to deal with overload and too much stuff.
Starfield: Full Inventory – 5 Tips
- 1. Tip: Death Sprint
If you run for too long, you will first lose oxygen, then the CO² content of your air in the suit will rise, and after that, you will lose life. However, you cannot die from this.
If you find yourself with a full inventory and a good distance from the ship, just run and push through. You will lose a lot of life and won’t run quite as fast anymore. But you will not die.
- 2. Tip: Distance Dump
If your ship is still somewhat within reach, you can empty your inventory into the ship via the ship menu. Open the menu, select your ship at the bottom right, and take a look at the action bar at the bottom of the screen. Here you will find the option “Cargo Hold”. There you can switch to your inventory and dump the stuff.
This only works up to a distance of 250 meters when you are outside the ship. A player has discovered that it sometimes works even in rooms that are further away. Experiment a bit.
- 3. Tip: Dragging Companions
You can fill your companions with stuff. Although companion NPCs also have an inventory limit, they are more than enough to quickly store a few delightful decorative objects.

- 4. Tip: Makeshift Outpost
If you are on an alien planet gathering resources, a small outpost is also suitable for storing items.
However, you should plan this in advance, as you need certain resources to create the outpost, set up storage, and a landing zone where you can later land to pick up the stuff:
- Landing Zone: 20x Iron / 88x Aluminum
- Cargo Container: 3x Adaptive Frames / 5x Aluminum / 6x Iron
You do not necessarily need the landing zone. You will get a landing point anyway and can land your ship near the containers. Some players in the thread report that their landing points are still far away from the outpost. The reason for this is currently unclear.
You can then expand the outpost later or tear it down.
- 5. Tip: Infinite Containers
Two containers may not help you with immediate overload, but if your entire storage space is slowly nearing its end, the parts are very valuable.
You have access to two containers with infinite storage in the Constellation lodge. One is upstairs in your room, the other in the basement in the first room by the workbenches.
In particular, the workbench container in the basement is apparently very popular. Since all the important workbenches are here, players carry their resources there and craft on-site.
