In the MMORPG The Lord of the Rings Online, players from the Arkenstone server created a touching memorial video. In it, they say goodbye to a friend who passed away in 2021.
Who is it about? The 37-year-old Brazilian André “Nabucodonosor” Girodo was an active player of the MMORPG The Lord of the Rings Online and was on the Arkenstone server.
However, André passed away in 2021. He leaves behind his wife and a child.
To honor his memory and remember him, friends from his server held a memorial and published it as a video on YouTube.
How did the event go? At the beginning of the video, the closest friends stand together in the moonlight while saying goodbye to André in Portuguese. Quotes are used from Gandalf (“I do not wish to say, do not weep. For not all tears are of evil.”) or other characters in The Lord of the Rings.
A funeral march takes place, with over 50 players participating. The song “The Last Goodbye”, also from The Lord of the Rings, plays during it.
At the end, the players gather on a bridge, set off fireworks, and celebrate the life that André had.
You can watch the entire video on YouTube:
Moreover, the creator of the video – Breno RPG – called for support for the family of the deceased. Within a day, 22,000 Brazilian Reais (approximately 3,300 Euros) were raised. You can find more details in the video description.
MMO players often see each other as friends or a second family
This is evident in the video: The nearly 16-minute-long video shows how much André meant to his fellow players. A eulogy is given, and they remember the deceased together, just like often happens with friends and families in real life.
The video that resulted from this moves viewers who often did not know the deceased or even the game at all. User Demissionaris Dusdattus commented under the video:
I did not know him personally, but I felt this loss, saw this honorable final farewell, and it moved me greatly. When the song began to play, tears of human emotions for another person flowed, but they were good tears. For a person, for a large group of people who can connect and share the loss in this way.
Farewells of this kind are not uncommon in MMOs, as players often have very close connections, even though they may never meet in person. They play together regularly, chat, or communicate via voice. This leads to strong bonds that can develop into friendships or even relationships.
We reported on one of these touching stories at MeinMMO in 2018. Gamers from different countries came together to support a friend:
