The aim assist is a major topic of debate in the crossplay title Call of Duty: Warzone. Mouse players find the aim assistance unfair, while controller players say, “It’s not that bad.” However, in certain situations, the aim assist indeed offers some sneaky advantages – as it allows players to locate enemies through walls.
What are people complaining about? With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare from 2019, the crossplay era began for CoD. For the first time, CoD soldiers could play together – and against each other – on different platforms. Since its launch, the aim assist for controller players has faced criticism. Mouse players criticize that the aim assistance is too strong and offers an advantage in certain situations – for example, when getting hit by a stun grenade.
On the other hand, controller players do not see the bonus as very significant. They argue that it compensates for the generally higher precision of a PC mouse. However, a case has emerged that clearly demonstrates that the aim assist provides unfair advantages. It can be used as a wallhack – at least in certain areas.
Aim assist can “see through” some obstacles
What does this look like? On the discussion platform Reddit, user “ThePizzaCook” shows a clip from Warzone.
PizzaCook is standing on the roof of a house in the west of the “Salt Mine”. He knows that at least one enemy is running around in the house beneath him. PizzaCook checks all directions to ensure that the enemy does not leave the house unnoticed.
After looking around for a few seconds, the player notices that his crosshair slows down slightly when he looks north over the roof. Here’s how the aim assist works in Warzone – near an enemy, the sensitivity of the crosshair decreases for a moment, giving a small aim boost.
This allowed ThePizzaCook to determine where the enemy was approximately located in the house below him. Not only that – since his AK-47 can shoot through this roof, he takes out his enemy safely from the secure roof. While PizzaCook states that he had to fire blindly a bit to hit the enemy, he also thinks, “That shouldn’t be a problem.”.
Why does this work? Normally, the aim assist does not work through obstacles. The commentators in the thread suspect that the specific roof on which PizzaCook stands is to blame. It’s not the aim assist that is broken, but the roof that is faulty.
User “Funny_Val” mentions that there are even more structures on the map where “wallhacking” is possible. As an example, Funny_Val cites gas stations and suggests that the roofs over the fuel pumps also allow aim assist.
Players revive the old discussion about aim assist
What do players say about it? In the thread about the topic, discussions about aim assist are heating up again.
- PC players face off against console players,
- mouse players against controller users.
- Everyone agrees that the mechanic shown in the clip is not right and needs to be fixed.
However, players using mouse and keyboard go even further and demand that aim assist should be completely removed from Warzone. Or at least that players with a good K/D should no longer benefit from it. Controller players argue that the aim assist is not as strong as mouse players portray it.
Will it stay that way? Currently, there is no entry about this on the developers’ Trello board (via trello.com). On the linked board, the developers display problems in the game they are working on. If the issue reaches the developers, they will surely address it. However, it is not currently a pressing problem.
