Those who have followed Destiny 2 from the beginning know how extensive the story is, making it even more tragic when half of the story ends up in the Content Vault. Many new Lights do not understand how the connections are woven together. This puts Bungie in a bad spot and deters new players.
What is meant by Content Vault? The Content Vault exists to “store” old content for an indefinite time. This means that old content will no longer be accessible. You will no longer be able to play or earn old areas or missions from past seasons. This creates space for new content, making it easier for Bungie to update Destiny 2.
Many players are against this, as it takes away the opportunity for new players to better understand Destiny 2 and the story. Guardians who have been around longer miss well-crafted missions or areas that have provided variety during some dreary Destiny 2 days.
Players do not understand why Lord Saladin hates the Cabal
What is the problem? Especially new players starting Destiny 2 do not understand many connections or even story fragments. Dialogues from NPCs are confusing, as events are mentioned that are no longer present.
A player on Reddit describes his situation very well; he tried to bring his friend closer to Destiny 2 and the story, and this is what happened:
I have a friend I play with regularly, who I tried to get closer to Destiny 2, but he did not understand the story that I and a few others discussed. It definitely made him feel like he did not belong, and in the end, he stopped showing up.

New players get lost in pure confusion, as no connections can be made. Questions arise such as:
- Who is the Red Legion?
- Why does Lord Saladin hate the Cabal?
- Who is Ghaul and what did he do?
- What is Caiatl’s relation to these events?
And many other questions that are not actively answered in the current version of Destiny 2. Since the lore unfortunately has to be unlocked in the collection and old lore fragments are no longer collectible, new players already reach their limits.
Bungie is shooting itself in the foot: The Content Vault is not well-received by older players, nor by new players. Through this “feature” of storage, older Guardians have no opportunities to visually explain the story to the new Lights.
This deters new players, and Bungie loses out on growth. No one wants to play something they do not understand.
It is clear, however, that Destiny 2 is generally a very complex game. Programming and evolving it is no easy task, as the development team has also gone through an odyssey to find out what course exists for the title’s continuation.
Bungie is in a pinch. Finding a middle ground in this problem is not easy.
How to find a remedy? Here, YouTubers who are well-versed in lore offer their help. They create videos in which they outline and present the story, as well as connections or theories.
They go through all the important points step by step and convey it to the viewer in a way that every new Guardian can understand. If videos do not appeal to you and you prefer quiet hours of reading, you can find websites that have documented the lore and every lore book.
This way, you can acquire a basic knowledge of the story and possibly discuss this with comments from the community.
What do you think of the current situation of Destiny 2? Do you think we will succeed in the fight against the Darkness if new Lights keep throwing in the towel? Let us know in the comments what you think!
