The first DLC for Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands has been released. However, hardly had some players started the DLC, they were already done. This is not going down well with the community.
This is the DLC: Since Thursday evening, players can engage with the content from the DLC “Coiled Captors” in Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands. The DLC costs 9.99 euros on consoles and on PC – or is included as one of four content drops in the game’s 30-euro season pass.
With the update from April 21, 2022, the DLC was also made accessible. However, while the update itself is receiving much praise for its many improvements and fixes, the reception of the first DLC is rather lukewarm.
Many players apparently expected more.
Short challenge falls behind good Borderlands experiences
What’s in the DLC? Basically, the DLC delivers what was promised: a challenge where players must fight through several rooms to face the boss “Chums” at the end. As a reward, players receive loot from the new destiny wheel.
Having accomplished that, the content will also become available in the Chaos Chambers. Players can challenge it repeatedly. Furthermore, Chums is expected to grow stronger in the coming weeks: a new form of the boss will be unlocked every week, up to its fourth and final form.
This is the problem: Many players are surprised by how short the DLC actually is. In the Wonderlands subreddit, disappointment is widespread: players report playtimes of around 20 minutes to complete the DLC. The actual run through the chambers and the fight against the boss can even be shorter: players managed to do it in under 10 minutes on YouTube.
In comparison with the popular and fairly extensive story DLCs from Borderlands 3, players view “Coiled Captors” as significantly weaker.
These DLCs cost 15 euros – nevertheless, players feel that even free events from Borderlands 3, like Bloody Harvest or the challenging takedowns, overshadow the new Wonderlands DLC.
The current top post in the subreddit with over 950 upvotes and more than 460 comments (as of April 22, 2022) is also critical of the DLC: “This is just a Chaos Chamber, but with additional steps, otherwise there are no new enemies or environments,” writes user “FabledTurtle” – and receives much support in the comments (via reddit).
- “Ironically, the DLC for the game that is based on one of the best DLCs of all time turns out to be so weak,” writes a user (via reddit). The Wonderlands concept is based on a popular Borderlands 2 DLC.
- “This should be an event, not a season pass DLC. It might be worth it if there were 3 of these bosses and more new loot. I really hope we get a story DLC,” writes another user (via reddit).
- “I must say, I am really disappointed with the DLC. It is basically the Chaos Chamber with a small difference. I was hoping for a bit more story, but it is just another repeatable set of rooms. I hope the other DLCs are better than this one,” another user finds (via reddit).
- “Good to know I’m not the only one. I was so excited about this. I completed it in 10 minutes and was confused about where the rest of the DLC is. To say I am disappointed is an understatement” (via reddit).
What exactly will be included in the upcoming DLCs of the season pass is still not entirely clear – however, they will also bring more “Mirrors of Mysteries” behind which challenges are hidden. Additionally, there will be a seventh class in the fourth DLC.
It remains to be seen how the reception of the DLC might change in the coming weeks – as the boss goes through his new forms.
