In Destiny 2, players have a lot of fun freezing others with Stasis, but they freak out when they get frozen themselves.
Players have a new toy: On November 10, Guardians received new content with Destiny 2: Beyond Light. The launch of the expansion was rocky, but also very successful. One of the highlights of Beyond Light is Stasis.
Stasis is a new element in the Destiny universe – it can best be compared to ice magic from other games.
- With the push of a button, you create ice walls
- Slow down enemies with frost
- Or freeze them right in place
- Of course, you can also shatter frozen enemies into a thousand tiny pieces
Check out Stasis in action here:
This is now the Stasis problem: This playstyle: freezing opponents and then spectacularly shattering them is new for Destiny and is just a lot of fun. However, only as long as you are the one turning others into snowmen.
If you freeze a group of aliens in PvE, no one complains about the standstill. However, some of the new enemies can also freeze the players. And then you realize as a Guardian: standing around like an ice pillar is uncool!
In the Crucible, however, it’s a whole different dimension, that is PvP. Here, being frozen often means guaranteed death. You can try to break out of the ice, but that almost never works. And as is typical for an expansion, almost everyone is playing the new classes…
Has Bungie now killed the Crucible with Stasis?
So unfair is Stasis in PvP: The new Stasis classes have quite a few means and ways to bring their icy breath of death over other players:
- Grenades that create ice walls or even track and freeze their targets
- “Melee attacks” that can freeze Guardians from a distance
- Supers that freeze entire rooms
- The new exotic “Grasp of Salvation” fires icy charges
The absurd range of some Stasis skills is demonstrated by the biggest Destiny streamer Gladd – not even behind walls are you safe:
This is what players say: Other streamers are also painting a grim picture of the Crucible’s future.
Gothalion, the former number 1 of Destiny celebrities, can no longer sleep peacefully due to Stasis:
Expert Gigz freaked out because of Stasis – but he might change his opinion later:
Things look a bit different for Mtashed – the one who recently made headlines with Genshin Impact. He believes that you can either balance PvP and have boring PvE, or go fully towards the crazy space game:
But not only the Destiny celebrities agree that thanks to Stasis, PvP is currently totally broken. The community on Reddit is voicing its opinions about Stasis. For example, it is asked, “Has anyone ever won or survived a 1vs.1 while frozen? Ever?” (via reddit)
No one saw this coming? Yes, they did. Right after the introduction of Stasis and the icy skills, voices in the community arose predicting just that. We also reported on this here on MeinMMO.
The problem is not new, it’s 20 years old
With Stasis, Destiny has taken a big step towards action MMO and intensified its MMORPG influences. For the first time, there is large-scale CC (Crowd Control). Yes, before, a Hunter could bind enemies or a Titan could momentarily blind, but Stasis is a different ballpark.
Anyone who played Dark Age of Camelot, WoW, or Guild Wars 1 at the turn of the millennium and in the early 2000s knows that crowd-controlling enemies, making them helpless, and then taking them out is really fun. But even receiving CC is just a joy killer. That hasn’t changed to this day.
In modern shooters like Call of Duty, there’s hardly anything more annoying than getting flashed. After the stun, you stare at the white screen for seconds, only to then see the killcam.
So now, is PvP in Destiny lost? Probably not. Keep in mind that Beyond Light is only a few days old and everyone wants to show off their Stasis Guardians and still don’t know how to counter the new ice skills.
Moreover, Bungie will keep an eye on Stasis’s performance in the Crucible and should it take over permanently, they will patch it. For a while, you will certainly have to put up with the ice chaos.
Are you already playing PvP or are you still caught up in the story of Beyond Light? How do you assess the situation, is this really being exaggerated?
If you want to have fun with Stasis, you have to complete some quests. Here, MeinMMO has a guide for a mission that rewards you with customization options for the ice power: Destiny 2: This is how you find all 9 Entropic Shards for “Aspect of Control”
