In Pokémon GO, the Holiday Cup: Mini Edition has started. However, the big favorite is no longer allowed to compete. Frustrating for players who focused on this Pokémon.
This is the cup: The Holiday Cup: Mini Edition is a PvP mode in the battle league where only monsters with a maximum of 500 CP are allowed to participate. Only the types Electric, Flying, Ghost, Grass, Ice, and Normal are permitted.
This was the favorite: The ordinarily useless Smeargle seemed to become the dominant Pokémon in this cup. On the battle league platform PvPoke, it was identified as the best monster for the competition, we also reported on the potentially strong Smeargle in the cup.
The sudden strength of Smeargle was due to the fact that you can only obtain it by taking snapshots of other Pokémon, and then Smeargle randomly appears in the picture. It then takes on the moves of the Pokémon being photographed.
This allows it to have extremely varied movesets, some of which would have been perfectly suited for the new cup.
But now it is clear: Smeargle will not dominate the cup. Because although it technically fits the cup’s criteria, players cannot choose it. In the game, when you click on Smeargle, it says: “This Pokémon is not allowed in this cup.”
This is frustrating for players who focused on improving their Smeargle beforehand. Others, however, are quite glad about it.
Trainers discuss unexpected ban
In the subreddit “The Silph Road” for Pokémon GO, trainers are discussing the ban on Smeargle (Here is the post on reddit). The specific reason for the ban is currently unknown, but it is clear that it was not made known beforehand that Smeargle would not be allowed to participate. However, it has been the case in the past that Smeargle was not allowed in certain competitions.
Accordingly, the comments reflect this. While some support the ban, it is unfavorable for others. A few examples:

- “I was one of those people. I’m not sad, because it was clear that the thing would have been broken, but a warning would have been nice,” said user zurrick (via reddit)
Similar comments continue to accumulate under the post. Other players share that they were just in the process of improving a Smeargle. Others are glad that it is not allowed in the cup because it would have disrupted the balance.
