The release of Diablo 2: Resurrected was somewhat rocky, but most issues seem to have been resolved by now. Only one stubborn problem remains: AVX support. This currently prevents some players from enjoying the remaster. Blizzard is responding.
What are the current problems? Currently, there are complaints from some fans that they cannot play Diablo 2 on PC. The game simply doesn’t start. This issue follows several other launch difficulties, such as:
- overloaded servers at launch
- connection drops or difficulties starting and joining online games
- seemingly deleted characters
- questions about the necessity of PS Plus and Xbox Live
Most of these problems have now been resolved, but some affected players still cannot start Diablo 2.
Where does the problem come from? The AVX technology has apparently been identified as the cause – a protocol that has been used in almost all processors since 2011. In the original requirements for Diablo 2 (from 2000), AVX was not a requirement.
By now, Blizzard states that all processors that do not support the technology fall below the minimum requirements. This is unfortunate because: during beta, everything worked, and it is now leading to poor ratings for the game. The team is now responding to the complaints.
AVX fix is coming, but it could “affect all players”
Will the error be fixed? Right now, developers are working to fix the required AVX support for Diablo 2: Resurrected. According to community manager PezRadar (via Blizzard forums):
“The team believes they have a potential fix, but it goes beyond AVX. It could affect all users […] While CPUs without AVX fall below our minimum requirements, we want to ensure that as many people as possible can play. Setups without AVX worked in the beta. When we optimized the game, we accidentally added AVX as a requirement.”
However, this will take a few more days. To ensure that players who are already playing are not affected, quality assurance will continue testing for a few more days. Those who have already bought Diablo 2 but prefer to wait for a final purchase until after the fix should contact customer support for a possible return.
What’s the status of Diablo 2? The remaster does exactly what most fans expected: it brings new light to an old game but doesn’t change much – although there are indeed a few changes.
Some problems and new bugs are being fixed by patches, but most remains the same. Consequently, Diablo 2 also excites those players who can play it and can even attract some new fans. If you’re still unsure whether Diablo 2 is worth it for you, our checklist on MeinMMO will help you:
