At Destiny 2, there is a discussion about annoying teammates: The favorite are “wannabe players” who want to defeat bosses in a cool, time-saving way and end up messing it up so badly that they waste everyone’s time and nerves. This could probably be summarized as tryhard.
This is a peculiarity of Destiny:
- When Destiny was released in 2014, it was a novelty for players on Xbox 360/Xbox One and PlayStation 3/PlayStation 4: Because there was no shooter with MMO mechanics like this.
- Over time, clever players found ways to make the game easier: There were spots from which one could shoot but not be hit. Or it was possible to shorten a boss fight by pushing the opponent “off the platform”.
- What was seen as a clear exploit in other players and frowned upon, was viewed in the Destiny community as permissible and somewhat clever. Such exploits were called “cheeses”, when one wanted to take down a boss, it was said: “We’re cheesing it.”
Those were the days:
What is a popular cheese today? One thing seen as “modern cheese”: Focusing on taking down a boss with maximum damage right in the first phase to save oneself from boss mechanics.
This is referred to as “one-phasing”, meaning “killing in one phase.”
Players who want to be cool, but just can’t
Here’s the problem: The most successful thread on reddit at Destiny 2 this week revolves around “cheesers who just can’t get it right.” They are seen as the most annoying teammates ever.
An annoyed user says he has been in a raid group for half an hour that wants to “cheese” Atheon violently, but the people just can’t pull it off.
Instead of giving up and taking down the boss in the normal way, the group insists on taking the shortcut, messes it up, and then starts all over again.
He is now only in the group because he has developed a sick curiosity about how long the guys will keep messing it up.
Rather die after phase 1 and restart than “play through calmly”
Do others experience this too?? Yes, it seems to be a widespread phenomenon. Other users also chime in and complain about tryhards who want to “shortcut” a boss, can’t pull it off, and then hold everyone up:
- One user says: “I love it when they insist on taking down a boss in one phase and then wipe repeatedly instead of just calmly approaching the boss in 2 phases.”
- Another says: The problem with these people is also always that they mess it up themselves and then blame others who “don’t understand the cheese.”
- A third user says: From his experience, people who insist on the “cheese” are often ones who don’t even know how to do the boss in a normal way.
This takes on completely absurd dimensions in the story of another Destiny player. He recounts that he was in a random group and had the last boss down to one tiny HP bar, when one of the players yelled “Wipe, Wipe, Wipe. Oh my God, can we please wipe so we can restart and do it in one phase.”
Well, somehow it seems that the “cheesing” has taken on a life of its own.
A well-known weapon that could handle difficult boss fights:
