Anyone who hasn’t checked in on Star Citizen in years but has an account should maybe give the SciFi MMO another chance. Because even though there is still no final release date, the game from Cloud Imperium offers a unique experience with patch 4.1… at least if everything works.
How has Star Citizen improved over the years? That is precisely what a current post by the player Warmtofu on Reddit reveals. He explains that he had already tried Star Citizen during Alpha 3.8 (released in December 2019). Due to bugs, terrible performance, and crashes, he hadn’t even finished the tutorial mission back then: “I had a terrible time.”
He therefore used the refund option to get his money back. A week ago, he jumped in again because a good buddy raved about Alpha patch 4.1 and claimed it was “the best game ever.”
Warmtofu logged into his new starter version and was surprised: After 5 hours, no crashes, no technical problems, no annoying rubberbanding (where the character jumps from one position to another without traversing the space in between).
The player flew through space with his friends, completed missions, and got himself a hoverbike. He has had so much fun with Star Citizen since his restart that his new conclusion is downright euphoric: “There is NOTHING comparable to this game. I am in love. […] It feels like the Wing Commander MMO I’ve always wanted.”
Since Alpha patch 3.24, you can have your own hangar in Star Citizen:
“This is the game I have waited my entire life for”
How does the community react to this report? Many of the comments emphasize that you can already have a lot of fun with Star Citizen… at least under one condition (the game is still in alpha).
- DJNaviss explains on Reddit what that condition is: “When it works, it’s a magical experience! There’s nothing like it.”
- Anxious-Strawberry70 adds on Reddit: “‘If it works’ is said repeatedly. And this year, that ‘if’ happens more often; sometimes it doesn’t work, but that is gradually becoming less frequent as stability increases. With the increased server caps, the new content, and all the things they’re doing this year, it’s fantastic.”
- SmoothOperator89 cheers on Reddit about the report: “It’s encouraging to see that people who had used the refund out of frustration are coming back and changing their minds. There’s no second chance for a first impression, and who knows how many bridges CIG has burned over the years, but I’m glad there are some people giving it another try.”
- KyewReaver writes on Reddit: “I played Wing Commander, Privateer, and Freelancer, and even then I still wanted something more. Star Citizen is what I wished for. This is the game I have waited my entire life for.”
What can you expect in Star Citizen? Thanks to the numerous updates of the past years, you can now expect a persistent universe in Star Citizen that consists of huge planets, moons, space stations, and more.
As part of this universe, you can engage in various activities such as transporting cargo, salvaging shipwrecks, mining ores, racing, hunting criminals, rescuing stranded pilots, trying your luck as a thug, or exploring with your spaceship.
That Star Citizen can still be updated 14 years after the start of development is thanks to the numerous supporters who continue to invest a lot of money in the project.
