Even weeks after the release, players are still occupied by Diablo 4 and Lilith, the game’s great antagonist. She exerts a strange fascination on fans who apparently overlook how evil the horned lady actually is due to her charisma.
What is the deal with Lilith?
- Lilith is the daughter of Mephisto and a demon known for her penchant for sin, torture, and suffering.
- Together with the angel Inarius, she created the world of Sanctuary and humanity. She is essentially the reason we even exist in the game.
- Yet, we fight against her, and some players apparently do not understand why. A thread on Reddit with over 2,000 replies explains why.
Everything about Lilith can be found in our lore article:
This is what fans say: The creator of the post claims to see no evil in Lilith. No one in the story has a good point; we only fight her because she is a demon, and that is bad. However, she only wants to prepare Sanctuary for a battle with the great evils.
The post faces a lot of backlash in the comments. Some players cynically explain that it was not the best start to be attacked by Lilith’s “created” cannibals in the very first minutes. The comment from user ZZGooch with over 7,500 upvotes details the “details” that one might “overlook” a bit more elaborately:
- there are piles of corpses everywhere
- there are tortured victims on every corner
- due to Lilith’s influence, dozens of people fight each other

Lilith even unleashes a powerful demon on a helpless city
According to ZZGooch, it helps not to only stare at Lilith’s breasts during the cutscenes but to actually listen to her when she says something. It becomes quite clear that she is not exactly the ideal leader for humanity.
Lilith has captivated players early on:
“The only good comes from humans”
The discussion also raises Lilith’s actual plan, which we won’t reveal yet due to spoilers. While she officially wants to prepare Sanctuary for a war, she has rather strange methods to do so.
Lilith’s idea, or at least that of her followers, is to “eliminate the weak.” Therefore, all those who do not believe in her must die. In a world, where there are already practically no humans, that is probably not a good idea.
Even all the dangers that Sanctuary is supposedly exposed to come only from Lilith herself. Nothing of that has been truly confirmed. She could simply be lying and using people for her true goals.
Other players argue that the angel Inarius is no better. He only cares for his children when it suits him and does not shy away from murder and genocide against them.
User yogi-in-the-forest therefore ponders: “I think the story is that reality itself is evil and there is no good in angels or demons. The only good comes from humans.”
The discussion even veers off in some places, criticizing the Horadrim and praising one of the fanatics from earlier installments. One should have simply followed Zoltun Kuls’ plan and lead the humans back to their former power. If you need a refresher here, you can find the summary of the story here:
