In the new “Not Quite Free2Play” game Fortnite a player spent $1500 to acquire a mythical hero.
A post is circulating on reddit from a Fortnite player who desperately wanted to own a “mythical hero”; this is the rarest form of hero in Fortnite.
The post is titled “$1500 spent and not a single mythical hero.” The player laments his fate: He bought llama after llama and did not receive what he wanted. $1500 is about 1273 euros.
Fortnite: Not Quite Free2Play
Fortnite has a relatively complicated payment model: Essentially, they want to become a Free2Play game with a cash shop later. Currently, Fortnite is in Early Access and players have to buy access, just like a “normal” Buy2Play game. The cash shop is already unlocked, however.

With real money, players can buy booster packs, known as llamas, and try their luck with them. Llamas have the chance to yield certain item combinations. In Fortnite, there are numerous items of different quality classes.
Heroes are the characters in Fortnite, a player can choose their hero before each mission. Mythical heroes are ultra-rare, apparently so rare that one can spend $1500 without receiving one.
Pure Vanity
The player purchased “upgrade llamas” – these llamas have the chance to transform into a silver version with more loot. The silver llamas, in turn, have a chance to upgrade from silver to a golden llama with even more loot. With a lot of luck, a mystical hero can be inside a golden llama.
So one must be lucky three times:
- The upgrade llama must turn silver
- then the silver llama must become golden
- and then there must be a mythical hero in the golden llama

The player has spent so much money that he has become a llama expert. He believes that approximately every 10th upgrade llama manages to become a golden llama.
The player wants the mythical hero for pure vanity reasons, as he states. They are not much better than legendary heroes in Fortnite.
Happy Ending – But With a Bitter Aftertaste
The thread on reddit has a happy ending. The poster says: “5 minutes after I opened the thread, I found the mythical hero.”

Misfortune in happiness: It was the hero “Swordmaster Ken,” a ninja. The player wanted that one the least.
Llamas can also be earned by V-Bucks, the in-game currency in Fortnite. To find out how to best get them, read this guide:
