A player of the MMORPG Old School RuneScape received 8 bottles of schnapps on a flight, as he had talked to a flight attendant about an MMORPG he was currently playing on his smartphone. For the fans of the MMORPG, it is a sign of the special bond that “Old School RuneScape” creates among players.
What kind of MMORPG is this?
- Old School RuneScape was released in 2013 for PC and in 2018 for mobile devices. Most players use the Jagex Launcher, but there is also a version on Steam.
- The game is a representation of the MMORPG RuneScape as it was around 2007 – similar to WoW Classic, it is the retro version of an old but still successful MMORPG that many longing for the “golden days” of their childhood.
- Old School RuneScape is exciting because it is now more popular than the actual retail RuneScape: So it is the ninth largest MMORPG in Germany, according to Google. The regular RuneScape does not make it into the top 10.
He saw the steward playing an MMORPG on his phone
This is what the player says: On reddit, a player reported that he had just come from the bathroom on the plane and noticed that one of the flight attendants was playing Old School RuneScape on his smartphone. He briefly spoke to him and praised the MMORPG before returning to his seat.
The flight attendant was busy but took a moment to later talk to the player about the MMORPG: What skills he has at 99, how heonce looked for the “Infernal Cape” and why he kept coming back to the game.
The player thought: “That’s a nice conversation, where you wouldn’t expect it,” but otherwise didn’t give the chat much significance. However, on the last round, the flight attendant gave him a paper bag marked “Trash” and said, “Have fun with that.”
The player was perplexed and wasn’t quite sure what to make of it. But when he opened the bag, he saw 6 bottles of whiskey and 2 bottles of bourbon inside. He said it felt like Christmas.
How is this being discussed? The RuneScape community is known to be quite a cynical bunch: on reddit they immediately speculate that the steward is actually planning a scam in RuneScape and likely wants to pacify the player with the gift only to later rob him.
But in a quiet moment, one player also says: That is indeed a great feeling. You know how it is when you say you played the MMORPG as a child and are then ignored. But actually meeting someone who also plays RuneScape feels great.
The MMORPG is something very special and an important part of many people’s childhood.
The player also says in an interview: Even if it sounds cheesy. It is pure nostalgia and very comforting to stroll through Varrock and simply chop a tree for EXP.
