In Baldur’s Gate 3 the Honour Mode is for players who want to face an extreme challenge. Even the smallest mistake can lead to Game Over. One player destroyed his friend’s run with just a single Cantrip.
What is Honour Mode? Honour Mode in Baldur’s Gate 3 is a hardcore gameplay option where only a single save file exists, and you cannot use save scumming. You only have one chance, and if your party dies, you lose. This mode is intended for experienced players looking for an extreme challenge.
A player named Lordlyweevil78 dared to venture into Honour Mode. After just 50 minutes of gameplay, he received a request from a friend who wanted to join the game. Since the player had little to lose, he agreed to let his friend join his adventure – a big mistake, as it turned out.
In the next 5 minutes, a series of wild events unfolded
What happened? The player shared his story on Reddit. In just 5 minutes, the friend caused the Honour Mode to come crashing down with a single Cantrip. During a dialogue, the friend decided to cast the Cantrip Friends
on the friendly leader of the tieflings in the Emerald Grove – namely Zevlor.
Which dialogue is it? It occurs in the scene when you first enter the Emerald Grove after successfully defending the grove against a few goblins. Zevlor and a curly-haired mercenary are arguing, and things are about to escalate.
However, you can easily defuse the situation through dialogue – without needing to cast Friends
, which Lordlyweevil78 criticizes his friend’s decision for even more, even though he apparently meant well.
Cantrip Friends
destroys Honour Run
What happened next? After the friend cast the Cantrip on Zevlor, Zevlor was anything but friendly. Zevlor kicked the players and threw them into the prison of the goblin lady Sazza.
The player says the following:
The scene where she [Sazza] is threatened plays out and pulls me out of the prison where the game thinks I should be, triggering the dialogue
You should be in prison. We fail the dialogue
Lordlyweevil78 on RedditI shouldn’t be in prison, you’re crazy, so suddenly the whole grove wants to beat us up and we’re level 2 without weapons, to make a long story short, we get taken down.
What does the Cantrip do? With Friends
, you gain an advantage on charisma checks against non-hostile creatures. You charm someone to manipulate dialogue in your favor. If the Cantrip is successful, the target considers you a friend and is inclined to act kindly and even help.
With this, you can:
- Access important information
- Gain an advantage in negotiations
- Convince an NPC to help you, for example
But here’s the catch: The Cantrip can cause friendly characters to suddenly become hostile. Because, who wants to be manipulated? So, when the spell wears off, the target may realize that it has been charmed.
At best, you should use Friends
against NPCs you never plan to meet again.
Especially in Honour Mode, this can quickly lead to a fatal mistake and ruin your run, as this story vividly demonstrates.
