In the MMORPG Oldschool Runescape (Steam), a player invested 20,000 hours into a character to rank first on a leaderboard. But now he has lost access to his character: a hacker took over the account and changed the character’s name to mock the player. He had used the same password for everything online.
What has the player achieved? The MMORPG “OldSchool Runescape” is known for players seeking very strange and time-consuming tasks to spend their lives on.
The player “Diddleboy” has set himself the task of playing a “Skill Pure.” This is what you call a character that develops no combat skills but solely increases non-combat skills. These characters are also called Skillers:
- This player practically never fights to avoid gaining combat experience.
- He focuses entirely on leveling up the other skills.
Player considers himself the “only true MAX Pure” in Runescape
By playing this way, it actually becomes impossible to increase the “Slayer” skill to the maximum value that is enhanced by killing monsters. But Diddleboy even managed to maximize this skill in 2021 by eliminating pests in the Varrock Museum for 8,000 hours.
This insane play has made Diddleboy number 1 on the “Old School Skillers – Hiscore.” (via twitter):
- The player himself stated that most “Skillers” reached the maximum 15 times and would ignore “Slayer,” not considering it part of the challenge of maximizing all “non-combat skills.”
- However, he is the first to have now reached maximum in 16 skills, thus being the first skiller who is TRULY at maximum.
Player logged out in the middle of the game and cannot access the account
This is what happened to him: On March 12th, the character was hacked and stolen.
The player himself says: He was logged out of the game, thought he only needed to re-enter the authentication, but then realized: His password was incorrect.
He writes: This is very serious. He has invested 20,000 hours into this account and has only this one single account.
Player apparently had weak account security
What is the insidious part? The hacker had temporarily taken over Diddleboy’s Twitter account and wrote there: The player’s password was simply his Discord name spelled backward and he had no two-factor authentication on his emails.
The name of “Diddleboy” was changed to “SamePwEvrywr” – seemingly mocking him, as the hacker implies that the man uses the same password for everything.
Now there are fears that the hacker could even go to extremes and level the player’s combat skills so the account would be “defiled” forever.
A cruel thought.
“Years of life wasted”
How is this being discussed? Diddleboy is viewed quite critically. Some users on reddit say the guy has always acted out and has been toxic. He has acted like a “big fish in a small pond,” even in this niche community.
Diddleboy hasn’t even been able to protect his account – now “years of his life are wasted.” Though one user retorts: The years of life were already wasted with the decision to play Runescape this way.
Others add, that is the guy who has called himself the “one true Max Skiller.” What a tosser.
Others say: One must still empathize with what happened to him. He did not deserve this.
Again, other users on reddit add: This should be a lesson for all who deal so carelessly with their passwords.
Fear of losing the “purity” by the hacker killing too many monsters
What happens next? Diddleboy has reached out to Runescape support. He hopes to get his account back. Until then, he asks that perhaps it would be good to temporarily disable the account.
His nightmare is apparently that the hacker could indeed slay a monster with his “truly pure hero.”
