In the level phase of Monster Hunter Wilds, you will encounter limits beyond which you cannot increase your hunter rank at first glance until you have made certain progress in the story. The good news: Your earned XP will not be lost!
What are these limits? In Monster Hunter Wilds, you often have the choice of whether to take on a quest from the main story or an optional hunt or task next. However, sometimes the story will only continue after you have achieved a sufficiently high hunter rank through other activities.
Just as you level up, you will occasionally encounter an invisible barrier that will only be lifted once you have progressed far enough in the main story. That is to say: Until then, your hunter rank will not increase, no matter what else you do.
This is what awaits you after the main story of Monster Hunter Wilds:
No experience points are lost!
Wait, will I lose my earned XP? Don’t worry, nothing is lost! Until you reach the next milestone in the story that raises the limit for the hunter rank, the game keeps track of every experience point you earn in the background.
Once you have progressed far enough in the story, all the saved XP will come crashing down into your hunter account, often resulting in various rank-ups in just a few moments. The extent this can take is shown in the post by shiikurox on Reddit.
The player got so lost in side quests with hunter rank 40 that he eventually received 63 level-ups (!) all at once. The community celebrates this with about 4,000 upvotes and over 130 comments.

iamcll wonders on Reddit how such a huge jump is possible. He himself has done all the optional quests but only jumped from hunter rank 40 to 64. thalesjferreira explains on Reddit that he was able to achieve at least 45 level-ups by farming all the armors and weapons available up to that point.
