True fans of World of Warcraft have every game version on their shelves. Even those that have no use, but carry a lot of history.
In the long history of World of Warcraft, not only have numerous versions of the game appeared in stores around the world – but also some that are now hardly found anymore. One particularly old variant has now caused quite a stir and a lot of positive vibes.
What nostalgia is involved? In the gaming subreddit, the player GatsbyTheMediocre posted a message titled “Absolute steal at my local second-hand shop for only 1 Euro!” The attached image shows a (supposed) retail version of World of Warcraft from Vanilla times. At least if you ignore the printed note that says “Pre-order only. Game not included.”
What kind of box is this? The box is the pre-order box for the original version of World of Warcraft. It was available in stores for a while over 20 years ago.
However, the box did not actually contain the original game – it was just a pre-order box that only included the code for the final beta (and the game’s soundtrack). When the box was released, WoW was not even finished. The complete game version, which was then delivered on 4 CDs, came out later.
Nevertheless, this box has become a collector’s item for some, and those proud of their Warcraft collection on the shelf might consider this packaging the cherry on top.
The community shows amusement: Even though the post received many upvotes due to the nostalgia associated with owning this box, there are also a number of amused comments.

GatsbyTheMediocre has stated that he actually posted the message as a joke, which was apparently misunderstood. It was meant to be a joke in the sense of “Hey, I got the game cheap!” – even though it was just a pre-order box with beta access. In the meantime, he has also learned that for some it is already an interesting collector’s item that could increase in value over the years.
Meanwhile, a warlock in WoW Classic has become cooler than all the other warlocks. And what he has achieved, probably no one else will reach.
