A player of the new Final Fantasy XVI explained on Reddit how you can have more fun with the combat system of the role-playing game.
Final Fantasy XVI (FFXVI) has been officially playable since June 22, 2023. The latest installment of the popular role-playing series sends you on a journey as “Clive Rosfield,” promising many dark details.
To this end, FFXVI relies on an action-packed combat system that tests you against powerful opponents in nerve-wracking battles – this can be unsettling for some fans of the series who prefer turn-based gameplay.
Therefore, Reddit user Megaflare explained in a post how you can have more fun with FFXVI if the combat system seems too monotonous to you. The trick: not just pressing one button.
What does the player say? Megaflare responds to some comments on Reddit that he read regarding FFXVI. Some players reportedly referred to the role-playing game as a “button masher” – a game where buttons are pressed rapidly and indiscriminately. Others reportedly said that they press the square button while playing.
Megaflare describes this style of play as “wrong” and believes that FFXVI players would have more fun if they used different commands and attack combinations:
If you hammer the buttons or just spam square, it’s not a fault of the game, you’re playing it wrong. […] What many people don’t understand is that your main attack doesn’t consist just of pressing square. If you press triangle after every square input, you can modify your combos with magic.
As an example, Megaflare mentions a few simple key combinations that can be played without much effort:
- Square, Triangle
- Square, Square, Triangle
- Square, Triangle, Square, Triangle, Square, Triangle
- Phoenix Flight, Square, Triangle, Square, Triangle, Square, Triangle, Square, Lohenschwinge, Phoenix Flight
Megaflare lists some actions that are already available to you in the prologue of the game and bring a little variety to the combat system:
Additionally, there are in the prologue: Phoenix Flight, followed by a normal or magical attack; perfect dodging counter; parrying; jump attacks; normal magic; charged magic; charged sword attack; Phoenix special attack, Helm Splitter attack, Stinger, and a few others that I have forgotten.
All these abilities are already available to you in the prologue of the game. Take some time to experiment with them and find out which ones you like and which ones you don’t, and which combine best with others.
Overall, Megaflare says, the Phoenix Flight is a good and versatile move with which you can extend an attack combination.
