Hardware is often found in the trash. This find is even a surprisingly strong upgrade of an old PC.
A gamer got lucky and found a gaming PC in the trash around the corner. And the hardware installed is surprisingly good. So good that some are wondering why the device ended up in the trash.
Mid-range PC from 2018 ended up in the trash and everyone is wondering why
What hardware is in the found computer? The user shares on Reddit several pictures and provides the specific specifications of the individual components:
- CPU: Intel i9-9900k
- GPU: RTX 2070 Ti
- RAM: 16 GB, Corsair Vengeance Pro 4000MHz
- Cooler: Noctua D15
- Motherboard: MSI z390 A Pro.
- Power Supply: Seasonic Prime TX-850, 80+ Titanium
At first glance, the hardware is already a few years old. The Intel CPU was released at the end of 2018, and the RTX 2070 Ti was also released at the end of 2018. However, even though some components are already 6 years old, they are still powerful enough for gaming today.
The gamer himself adds that this PC should even be an upgrade compared to his old PC. Both the processor, RAM, and power supply are significantly better, but the graphics card is worse than his old one. The finder has installed an RTX 3090 – at least if the components shared by the user are correct. He himself writes:
Honestly, most of the parts are better than what I have in my current system. It’s just crazy what people throw away.
Why do people throw away such hardware? We can only speculate about that.
- Some speculate that “mean” parents wanted to punish their child and threw the computer in the trash.
- Another adds that a friend always checks the trash bins in university towns. Many rich students throw away their electronics because they don’t want to deal with the return transport.
- A third jokes: If a different power supply had been installed, it could have been his old PC that his wife threw in the trash.
Old hardware can still be worth it in 2024, but it often depends on the individual case
It is sometimes really surprising what hardware and devices end up in the trash: For example, a gamer built a gaming PC solely from hardware found in a dumpster, because some really good items ended up as scrap.
Is it worth playing with old hardware? Generally, old hardware is often still powerful enough for work or gaming. In particular, an old RTX 2070 Ti still offers enough performance today and even supports features like DLSS.
However, with very old components, the benefits quickly diminish. Upgrading very old components is also rarely worthwhile and there are good reasons for that:
Old components are usually no longer manufactured because they have reached their production end, known as “End of Life” (EoL). Such replacement parts can sometimes be more expensive than simply buying new, modern components. 7 upgrades for your gaming PC that you should definitely not buy
