A rare video game was supposed to be auctioned for 14,000 euros. However, an honest collector informed the seller of the true value of the item. In the end, the young player received over 266,000 euros for the 37-year-old NES game from Nintendo.
In the history of video games, there have always been special consoles and games that are highly sought after by collectors and change hands for sometimes outrageous sums.
The rare copy of a video game was recently offered on eBay for 14,000 euros, far below its true worth. Fortunately, the young seller noticed his mistake and, thanks to a diligent collector, was able to sell the game for an incredible 266,000 euros.
A rare copy of The Legend of Zelda is worth 266,000 euros
What kind of game was sold? A young player who calls himself Kiro owned a sought-after copy of the NES game The Legend of Zelda. A family member had purchased the first production of the video game from Nintendo when it was released in 1987.
Until that point, he was not aware of how valuable his sealed version of the game actually is. Without informing himself about a possible purchase price, Kiro created an auction on eBay with the title. He hoped for a revenue of around 14,000 to 18,000 euros.
How did the auction go? Immediately after the listing was published, he received messages from people willing to pay more than the asking price. For example, a potential buyer offered him over 27,000 euros if he could pick up the item in person.
Kiro stopped the eBay auction when the last bid was over 16,000 euros. He realized that his game must be worth much more than initially thought. An honest collector contacted him via eBay and informed him about his rare copy of The Legend of Zelda.
Why is it so valuable? With the new knowledge, Kiro, on the advice of the experienced collector, approached an appraisal service that inspected the Nintendo title and awarded him a high rating.
As it is a sealed first edition of the 37-year-old game for the NES, this copy is highly sought after by collectors and is traded at a correspondingly high price.
To achieve the highest possible sale price, the title was later auctioned through the auction platform Heritage Auction, which specializes in this type of games.
There, the Nintendo video game changed hands for over 266,000 euros. Thanks to the honesty of the collector, Kiro received nearly 20 times the originally asked price.
