In Elden Ring there are many NPCs that you can meet during your journey in the Lands Between. One, however, is quite cunning and even steals from you when you least expect it. Who that is and how you can get your runes back, you can find out here.
What kind of NPC is this? It is Gostoc, the gatekeeper of Castle Stormveil. This clever fellow with only one hand wants to win your trust right at the start of your journey through the castle. He gives you the tip to take a detour instead of going straight through the gate to get into the castle.
A wise piece of advice, because players who ignore this will be shot at by many enemies and ballistae and killed. Despite his helpful gesture, you should not trust him, as he has his sights set on your runes. He steals from you as soon as you die and takes 30% of the runes you have dropped.
Despite his misdeeds, not all hope is lost. Because you can get your stolen runes back.

Player kills NPC – Gets 100 million runes
Where can I find the NPC? Gostoc can be found at the Site of Grace “Stormveil Main Gate” at the beginning of your journey. To do this, go right past the gate into the room with the two large tables. Gostoc is located at the wall on the right side of the room. So if you want your revenge now, you can take him out.
Later in your journey, however, Gostoc will change his position and often visit places that are hard to reach just to get your runes. The Reddit user Esbidee tracked down Gostoc at one of these locations to take revenge:
He encountered Gostoc on the roof of a chapel near the wall of Castle Stormveil. After discovering him, he kicked him into the abyss, thus killing the scoundrel. To his surprise, Esbidee received over 100 million runes as a gift because Gostoc had stolen them from him over time.
How does the mechanic work? The rogue Gostoc steals from you every time you die near Castle Stormveil. However, he doesn’t steal a random amount of runes but always 30% of the total amount you had in your pocket at the time of your death.
The interesting thing here is that Gostoc works like a bank. So if you haven’t dealt with this rascal yet, you can use him to stash your many runes to retrieve them later if you need runes. This way, they do not get “lost”.
