In Genshin Impact, the 5-star characters play an important role. However, to obtain them, luck and a lot of Primogems are required. A player attempted to accurately verify the drop rates and invested Primogems worth €12,500 for that purpose. His results are currently playing a significant role and could even save you some Primogems.
What happened? A player opened 6,000 wishes in a row and documented his experiences in a video on the platform bilibili. The opening took 76 minutes and took place back in September. However, the topic is currently more relevant than ever, and this has also contributed to the popularity of the video.
According to Digitalstatement, the player wanted to check the drop rate of 5-star characters. According to the developer miHoYo, it is 0.6%, and on average 1.6% when accounting for the “pity bonus.” This bonus increases the chance of getting a 5-star character the more wishes you open.
However, the developer’s statement was apparently not enough for the player.
How expensive were the wishes? For the 6,000 wishes, the player had to spend 960,000 Primogems. The best value pack in Genshin Impact offers 6,480 Genesis Crystals for €109.99, with one Genesis Crystal equaling one Primogem. Additionally, there are 1,600 bonus crystals included. Together, that makes it 1.3 cents per Primogem.
For all his openings, the player thus invested Primogems worth €12,480. He did not necessarily have to spend that amount, as there are also methods to farm Primogems in-game.
Drop rate is low at first and significantly increases after wish 76
Which characters did the user get most frequently? In his openings, he received the characters Qiqi, Mona, and Diluc most often.
He also noticed some interesting patterns:
- The chance of a 5-star character is likely 0.6% in the first openings, just as the developer promises
- However, the chance is said to increase significantly after wish 75
- After a maximum of 90 wishes, there is guaranteed to be a 5-star character, as promised
Do these experiences hold true? This roughly aligns with what other players are currently discussing on reddit. User Bunloagus wrote about his experiences observing “whales,” that is, players who spend a lot of money.
In doing so, he also references the above video and summarizes all his results in a table. From this table he concludes that
- The chance remains at 0.6% until wishes in the range of 30 to 50
- After wish 75, there is then a significant increase in chance
- Hardly anyone reaches wish 90, as they get their character before that

Smart ways to save Primogems
What can be learned from the entire action? If you want to save Primogems, you should only buy single wishes starting from wish number 75. Since the chance is said to rise drastically at this point, buying a 10-pack is not worth it.
Additionally, reddit user Akane_iro published a graphic with the results of simulated openings based on the above assumptions. It clearly shows that most characters would be drawn at wishes 76, 77, 78, 79, and 80. This corresponds with Bunloagus’s experiences.

A similar system is also said to exist for 4-star characters. The chance is said to significantly increase after the 8th wish. We reveal which 4-star characters are the best here.
The gacha system and whales: We repeatedly report on MeinMMO about players who invest a lot of money in the gacha system of Genshin Impact. The system encourages spending real money to get better characters.
However, not everyone is happy in the end with their decision to spend money.
The streamer Mtashed is a huge Destiny fan but has also played Genshin Impact. He has invested over $5,000 into his account, but now regrets having shown the game, especially the gacha system, so often.
